View Full Version : Kudos?

Hey guys, pardon me if the option to give kudos or a thumbs up to a post is already available; I'm still a brand new user.

I'm a part of another forum that has the option to give kudos to posts that others find helpful, agreeable, etc. Has this option been suggested before?

The "kudos," "thumbs up," or "like" systems have been recommended previously and haven't been taken very well due to the sour taste the reputation system left in everyone's mouth.

While I personally don't think this type system would be abused like the reputation system was and wouldn't become a popularity circle jerk, I don't think many people on the site are ready to see anything similar come back.

But for now I'll put a vote to support it.

Eh, no thanks. We don't need anything similar to the rep system. We're fine without it or anything else.

I'd support the kudos system, but we can definitely go without a giant e-penis.

Thanks for your input, guys. If there was to be a kudos system implemented, it shouldn't be a "free for all" privelege. Kudos should not be abused and favoritism should not be permitted. We don't need to keep track of everyone's kudos on a leader board or something like that - that just would just cause unnecessary drama and potential jealousy.

At least you understand why we're weary about making this decision. As mentioned earlier, we have a hard time accepting suggestions like this since our last time with this type of system.

I would go for something like this, but we don't need a bar to show around, how we're so helpful and stuff like that.

I didn't realise reputation had gone. I never really understood how it worked, or how to nominate people for it.

I don't really think this is a good idea. It will get abused, just like the rep system was. Members would put "Give kudos to my post!" or "If you like my post, give it a thumbs up!" or whatever, in their signature.
And if someone doesn't get as many kudos or thumbs up on a post as someone else, then they might bitch about it.

VT is just fine the way it is. :)

It would probably get abused, or people complaining about it 3 months after they've joined. It's better to not bring something that may have a detrimental effect on the forums.

Everyone remembers how the Rep system ended, it became so bad especially due to the fact it became very personal and caused so many arguments. I don't really see how it would help the forum

If at all possible, I think that something like the reputation system - i.e. an easy ability to comment on the posts of others - would, as I may have said in the whole reputation shenanigan, be beneficial, for want of a better adjective. I would often use that feature when giving reputation, and private messaging doesn't have the same convenience or organisation, making it usually not worth the hassle. That said, such a system should not have any numerical value attached to it. I always found the comments part of reputation to be useful - it was almost exclusively the numbers which caused people grievances. I know not whether such systems are available, but that is my take on the issue.

Condensed version: Non-points-based post feedback system?

No. The reason I support a "kudos" system is because it not only lacks a recorded leaderboard for people, but also because it lacks this feedback system.

The anonymous feedback of the rep system, from my understanding, was full of disgusting and hateful comments between members.

Apologies, this was I think due to my own ambiguity of phrasing. I agree that anonymity in this context would be detrimental, but the ability to comment was in fact my primary use of the reputation system (while signing all comments). This allows people to show (dis)approval of a post, without any tally.

Honestly, that's really just a PM/VM if you think about it.

I see where you're coming from. A "kudos" system, at least how I see it is incredibly simple. If you "like" the post, you click the "like button." A message displays at the bottom of each post saying 'User 1, User 2, User 3, and User 4 like this post." If there's a ton of people that like the post, it says "User 1, User 2, and 8 others like this post." You'd click on the "8 others" and go to a list of everyone that likes the post.

It doesn't tie in to the creator of the post, so there's no points or anything like that. There's no way to leave comments and there's no "negative kudos" or anything of that matter.

I do envision a time when the staff will revisit this idea, but I don't think it's anytime soon.

I will not be implementing a reputation-like system in the near future. We just got rid of it for obvious reasons and I can guarantee that if it were brought back that it would pick up right where it was left off -- a hot mess. Maybe sometime in the future, but for now let's just let the wake settle.

Rep leaving was pretty well received, so I don't think we're going to be implementing any similar system any time soon. It could still lead to popularity contests, and in my opinion it clutters threads on other forums I have seen it with due to all the usernames of people who have "thanked" that post showing underneath and creating unnecessary space waste.

This reminds me of the old Rep system.
