A tiger has killed a zoo visitor and seriously injured two others after it escaped from its cage in San Francisco this morning.

Police shot and killed the tiger as it turned its attention on another person in the zoo's cafe, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The injured visitors were taken to a hospital and listed in serious but stable condition, said local station KGO-TV.

The attacks happened about 10am AEDT (5pm local time) just as the San Francisco Zoo was closing for the day.

It is not yet known how the tiger escaped from its enclosure, located near the centre of the zoo, and made its way over to the cafe on the property's east side.

Firefighters and police officers with shotguns arrived at the scene shortly after the attack was first reported.

The tragedy comes a year after an keeper at the zoo was mauled during feeding.

A subsequent investigation found the zoo to be culpable because it had used inadequate fencing.

Earlier reports incorrectly stated that four tigers had escaped from their enclosures.

It's the zoo's fault. They should give the victim's family a ton of money in my opinion.
