I don't mean WWE! xD I'm talking about high school wrestling, I enjoy the sport and have been in it for over 9 years xD. It started many great friendships, and not to mention totally puts you into great shape :) basketball players are cool I guess.. But real men wrestle!

I really recommend it! It's never to late to join and become good at the sport (unless it's your senior year like one person I know) In fact my friend Luis started his sophomore year and through learning and hard work he is expected to take 2nd at the state tournament next year! it's a great experience and I definitely recommend it. Plus wrestlers do it better ;)

Good luck mate! I used to not do so good my freshman year because of me wrestling a whole different style with so many good team members
(we are the 7th best team in the state) But if you never give up and work as hard as you can you will become great. I finished my last year of highschool and am currently going to wrestle for college on a dorm book and meals scholarship

Sorry man, but in my 9 years no guy has ever gotten hard during wrestling, except for once and yes he was gay and it was in weigh ins. Idk what school you go too where they do o.o

No holds, When you wrestle people at my level it's harder and harder to pin other state ranking people like myself the match is usually decided by take downs and stand ups, Although I do have a love for the cross face ankle with good hips you can get a few back points and if the wrestler isn't so good I can pin them with a cradle, bundle of arms, or a Turk from that position. And no I have never "boned" I have no attraction to members of the same sex at all and see wrestling as ONLY a combat experience in the arena. If you go out there with your mind on something else you will get your ass kicked.

Wrestling isn't like that at all. You do realize that you will almost never feel their "ball sack" right? And odds are if a guy was popping one during the match like our 106 pounder I would do the same thing and continuously smash his face in with punches disguised as cross faces then would slam him on his head. Please do not make it sound like a sexual thing. It's a sport not an orgy for christs sakes

Ahh mate but the coaches workouts are what makes you so good. If you want to be even on the team at my school you do everything the coaches ask. Or else you are losing your chance to be one of the best wrestlers in Colorado. And if you quit wrestling so fast you are missing out!

Honestly, I don't mind pushing myself to the limit, I was in Cross Country/Track & Field, and I would literally feel like I was about to pass out, but I love the feeling that I was able to push myself to be one of the best. However, with wrestling it just wasn't my thing I think. I still wrestle, but not with a team. Still a great sport tho!

ahhh... wrestling. won league this year at freshman, team got second in varsity level(our #1 opponent had four cal state qualifiers) wrestling vasity 220Lb next year and hoping to make it to the second day of CIF and hopefully qualify to masters.
I have a question for you guys: since i can't lift(something to do with parents) you think rock climbing will get me strong? if you don't know, take a look at some rock climbing videos.

Yes I remember the first time I won league (freshman year) Varsity all 4 years at different weights and a state placer my senior year Our team had 7 Colorado state qualifiers and 9 regional and district placers. (the other two 5th) And yes rock climbing will help your forearms and pulling power which is VERY important. way more important than bench press. You will need those muscles alot more. Also if you are a 220 pounder I recommend you work on your speed, in order to be a better 220 wrestler you need to be fast AND strong when it comes to wrestling the elites.

Probably the only girl to post on this topic. OK please don't crucify me when I say this, but I think like high school wrestling is a waist of time. I think grabbing and pinning ought to stay in the bedroom, lol. Tbh, u wouldn't see a bunch of Romans, or Greeks, fighting by grabbing each other on the ground until submission. Real fighting, like the kinda I practice in, like Sambo, or Krav maga, is what should be taught, and competed for in schools.

our team is doing a lot better than the past couple years. my team back in the 70's and 80's was one of the best teams in so-cal. they the coach left but he is back now that his son is at the high school so hes back to coaching wrestling.
I am pretty fast, but i am working on my shots. heavyweight + shots + speed + strength = amazing

not gonna crucify you or anything, but heres my 2 cents on your comment. first, the thing about it being a waste of time and should be left in the bedroom, that made me laugh, but in all reality, wrestling is tougher than football or basketball.
As one of my assistant coach's said: It takes skill to play basketball, it takes guts to play football, but it takes skill, guts, and balls to wrestle. Putting on a basketball jersey makes you look short wearing XXXXXL clothes, football jerseys make you look buff but it is just the shoulder pads. Putting on a Singlet will make you not to give a shit about what others think, because you are there to win.
if you look in history, romans AND greeks both wrestled. It was their hand to hand combat. in war they you use throws and locks to knock out/kill their enemies, which eventually lead to pankration. Other wise they used wrestling as a game of strengths and a competitions. what are the only two sports that have stayed in the olympics(both ancient and modern(up till london))? Track and wrestling.
when you say real fighting, i hope you know that there is no one real fighting style that dominates the world. sure krav maga is good for self defense, sambo(which is a mix of a bunch of different wrestling styles) is also good for self defense. BJJ good if you have to go against someone bigger than you. but you see, if you but a boxer against a wrestler, what will happen? wrestler takes him down and boxer is screwed. Muy thai vs BJJ? muy thai artist may get a couple hits in but once he is down, he is dead.
To be the best fighter possible, you need to know multiple different styles. why do you think the best MMA practitioners know BJJ, Thai boxing, and wrestling? so they can fight standing, in between, and on the mat. sure sambo mixes wrestling and judo, but it has no punching(includes elbows) or kicks(incluides knees). Never ever again, please, say that they should teach this or that because it is a real fighting style. All fighting styles are real, but made for different situations.
also, the plus of wrestling, BJJ and other throwing/grappling sports are that the moves used in them can be practiced multiple times without lethally harming your partner. In Krav Maga, you can only practice a couple moves without needing to use protection.

The list goes on and on and on. No empire lives forever. The greeks were destroyed by superior strategy and the roman's by politics. sure. im up for a match. we have had this conversation before, but what if someone came at you with a gun or a stick or a knife? you'd be fucked. or if there were multiple attackers? you'd be fucked. in a realistic fight, martial arts like karate and kung fu are worthless and arts like BJJ and wrestling are only slightly better and should be used only as a last resort against a single attacker. there isnt a martial art for every situation, so you should practice as many as possible. as a workout, yeah, wrestling is great, but in the real world, it wont help much. and in krav, if you know how to practice drills and such without causing permanent harm.

Of course karate, kung fu and those are worthless in a real fight, but BJJ, especially in the hands of a master(like the gracie family) it is very effective. When i lived in brazil, i had a chance to witness a real fight, 3v1 against a BJJ master(never found his name out) who single handly beat the three. They were unarmed. But in reality, if you are in a situation where you are out numbered and you can't run, you just need to be aware of your soundings. Also, Wrestling it self can be used as a self defense, only if you have some advantage over your attacker(be it size, strength, or what not). Though in wrestling you work to Pin your opponent to win, the pinning moves can be used to knock out, dislocate bones, or severly injure.
