I am putting this in Mental Illnesses because I think this is really weird.

Anyways, yeah. I like being called straight versus gay and tall versus short and slim versus obese.

What really caught my attention with this is when I realized that I have a minor learning dis-ability called SLD. That stands for Specific Learning Disorder. I thing it's cool that I have this label. I am not bothered by it one bit.

I think it has to do with the fact that I tend to be an organized person, so labels keep everything in order properly for me. I felt weird typing that last part about me being organized... Can someone please explain this to me?

I find it useful to be open about things that identify us.
I let people know that I am Aspergic so they know how to treat me, and know how to act around me.
I think labels help us get to know eachother

I like labeling myself as well, if i have symptoms of a illness or something i will find something that fits them so i can tell myself that's whats wrong with me - probably shouldn't do that but i don't like being unclear on things. If i was confused about my sexuality or something like that and had no idea what to label myself as it would probably drive me crazy haha.

It's nice to know there's a name for whats going on with you because if there's a name then it means you are not alone. Other people have noticed this and given it a name and then doctors have gone on to diagnose it.
I think it makes you feel in control slightly as you know whats wrong, you have something to explain for the things you do and feel. Whereas someone who was so confused as to why they were experiencing they behaviour they do or the feelings they feel and had no name for it could be ver distressed and feel very alone.

I think it helps explain things, and simplify things as well. Life is really full of shades of gray, and labels help give some definition to that blur.

I agree that it's always nice to know what you have in terms of disabilities / mental illnesses / diseases / etc, but a lot of people don't like the flash it around. I can understand why. I'm the same way.

Labels are a complicated thing, especially when it comes to mental illnesses. I am diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. Some ASD patients like to be referred as 'A person with Aspergers/Autism' (this is my preference) while others don't mind being called 'Aspergers/Autistic Person,' Really the only thing people have to watch out for is calling each individual by how they prefer to be 'labeled.' It can be a pretty sensitive topic for some people!

I don't know. I kind of like labels too. It's the organization, and something you can actually call yourself.

Here's a label for ya: Human. I myself am a very organized person, but I don't like labels. They're constricting, suffocating almost. It's as if you're restricted to what you have been labeled, whether it be by yourself, or someone on the street. Without labels you have the freedom to express yourself as you wish, without needing an explanation based on what you have been labeled. Why go through all the hassle of having specific labels when you really only need one that generalizes every possible personality, sexuality, religion, or anything for that matter? Human works best; it's the only label you need.
