So I just stepped on a nail that could potentially be rusty. My mother said I got a tetanus shot 2-3 years ago and it lasts for about 10 years. Is that how it works, like a vaccination? Or do I need to go get one tomorrow?

Yeah, it was a vaccination. You'll be fine, considering you had it relatively recently. But if it was about to expire, I'd say you'd probably want to see a doctor within a week or so to get a new one, just in case. But science yours was just a couple years ago, you're fine.

Probably don't need it but I'd call doctor just to make sure.

This. I believe Tetanus shots are actually only really effective if you've had them within five years (though I could be wrong :P) but either way, you're fine in this situation.
