View Full Version : Running out of resources beyond that of Earth

you know how the earth will/might run out of raw resources, well what if we we're to eventually colonize to the point that we can't expand anymore and resources in the universe itself begin to run scarce?
Assuming the universe has limits on how far it will expand, do you think this could happen?

Before anything, we must learn how to travel at light speed if we are to reach other places in the universe and may I remind you that it is 99.99999.........(and several million more nines)9 percent impossible to reach the speed of light?
Before that, we'll have a war of nations and we'd experience an apocalypse.

Even if people colonise into space, we are just 1 out of 23910231809283190283192830129830123981209381029381092381029381203918230192830129 8310923810293812039812039812093182093 of the universe or something, lol.
People won´t exist long enough to run out of all those resources

The problem is that we have no idea how to sustain our self, the radiation in space can burn through our space suits in about 3 days

How will we travel waster thn light? A trip out of the atmosphere is very delicate and dangerous, let alone colonise another planet.

I'm sure by the time we start running our of resources needed for survival we'll have much more advanced spaceflight technologies.

By the time the universes resources run scarce, the universe would probably be drawing to a close. And it will do, in a few trillion years in something called 'heat death'.

the human race is incapable of something like that

It won't happen, earth will run out of recourses most likely before we can travel out of the solar system. The answer to this scarcity would be population control.

No it wouldn't be.
Even then it's already too late. Even if we stopped burning coal, and dumping industrial waste, and everything else we already have almost 200 years of climate change in the making. The earth is in a fever, and there's no doubt that the waters are rising, and people are already dying and losing their homes. I think of Earth as kind of an elderly woman, somewhere in her late 80's. Though she's still very vibrant, she's not as strong as she once was. And if she were to get sick. Even more sick than she is now, with influenza rather than a fever, things are going to get very bad. Even more people will die, and the amount of natural disasters will rise, and with that economic disasters.
So along with physically deteriorating, our whole infrastructure will fall along with it. But I don't think that's going to happen in our lifetimes. I remember reading somewhere that the earth, if we keep going on how we are now, will only have a billion years left to live.

If you know about the 3 civilization types, you may notice how humans are becoming a stage one civilization. We may be harvesting from other planets soon. We are starting to harvest solar and improvements of solar will be a option for when we run out of oil (if we do).

A billion years is plenty of time to evacuate. Look at how far we've come technologically in the just past few hundred, from sailboats to standing on the moon!

What does that have to do with what I just said.
And besides, I kinda doubt humans will be around in a billion years.

Do you believe in the theory of evolution?

Again, what does that have to do with anything.

Remeber to quote my responses in your comments so I get a notification and can respond!
It's relevant. Because if you do believe in the theory of evolution, you believe that a species changes and likely also a billion years ago our ancestors were single celled organisms. So, if you believe in the theory of elvolution, no, humans won't be around in a billion years. But much smarter, likely larger organisms would be; those would be our distant descendants.

That would be relevant if we were talking about evolution, but we aren't.

Yes we are. We're talking about mankinds ability to evolve and adapt when we can no longer live on Earth. It's very relevent. You can ask a mod to review it if you really don't think it is :)

No you brought that up.
We're talking about what would we do if it got to the point to where Earth becomes uninhabitable. Even if we were able to evolve, just how much do you think we could do if we couldn't live on earth anymore? Adaption won't matter. There won't be enough space or resources to provide for a species like humans. If anything we would have to revert back to how our ancestors lived.
I don't see terraforming happening at a fast enough pace for us to sustain ourselves if we did happen to run out of resources.
And stop being a smug little asshole. If you're going to keep acting like that, then just fuck off.

Actually we're both wrong. I just looked back at the original post. This guy wants to talk about if we'll ever run out of resources in the entire universe! :) lol.
