View Full Version : Why are teen boys so skinny?

Miserabilia

Okay, so I have noticed that most of teen boys (including me) are somewhere between skinny and very very skinny. Why is this? I have grown alot but stayed at the same weight, but that is not really why I look skinny, because even now,

when I gain weight, I still look skinny. My body just looks that way. Basicly every other boy in my high school looks like this.

Why is this? (and don't start about diets and sports because it definetly does not have anything to do with that, please a scientific answer)

Well sports do have a lot to do with it in some cases.. but I think it mostly is due to fast metabolism that teens tend to have.

It's because of your body type. You have a really fast metabolism so you will be very skinny no matter how much food you eat. And there will be those people who have a medium pace one and you see they all are average size and have a lot of muscle, then you have those really slow metabolisms where those people can get really overweight. They just have to workout more and harder to keep in shape.

It's mostly the type of metabolism you have.

mine's so high that I can easily become underweight.

I'm the same exact way. I think it's just great metabolism. I take in a good 3 thousand calories a day. the calories are what makes America so fat.

well its not really great imo.... I have a hard time getting any muscle making me very weak, and even when I get relitevely "buff" I am getting so tall my stretched figure makes me look skiny in any clothing

I'm the exact opposite. I used to be husky, but now I'm sitting at a good 155 lb. and I could use with losing a few more. I have that body type that builds muscle well, if ya know what I mean.

I'm 6'2, 17 and 250 pounds lol. There are a lot of skinny people in my school but we also have a bit of husky people as well.

I eat loads of crap, and I never gain weight which kind of sucks because it's hard to get bulky :P
I think in puberty your body is growing, and lots of teenage people have really fast metabolisms, so all the energy is going into growing not gaining weight :P

Teens are skinny because all you eat goes upwards, not to the sides.

First few times I read that I imagined a skinny teen with a huge fat head, but now I know you mean that it all goes to your growth, lol

I'm pretty sure it's a combination of sports and having a fast metabolism.

I do :)

That's the best way I know. Eat lots of proteins and lift weights regularly and make sure they're heavy.

I eat all the time too. All the time. If I were to count my calories it would be like 9000 a day.

Your dad having a heart condition has nothing to do with how you may be skinny.

Fast metabolism at this age, not to mention your body never really has a chance to fill out because teenage boys grow like crazy.

Genetics, High Metabolism, Born Prematurely.
I'm option 3.

Yea I guess its just has something to do with growth,...
I used to be a chubby toddler, then I was REALLY skinny from 6 to 9 years, then I reached normal weight again, but once i hit puberty I got really skinny again

We are...?

I was pretty chubby when I was like 11 or so. Now I'm a lot taller and look thinner. But I'm still kind of chunky.

As we enter ages 12-23 boys are first of far more active than any other time in our life also because we are growing at such a rapid pace our body not only devours protein and carbs at an extreme rate it also causes us to feel well..pooped most of the time. If you take time to consider each system in the body and your daily life you'll realize that your body is ever changing and working at a high rate. sorry i want to be a doctor..

I aggree with most of that, but im not active at all. If I were to calculate how much calories I would burn in a day it would be like 500, and what I eat would be like 4500, yet im skinny. I dont do anything, I just lie in bed all day usualy.

Teenage guys don't start lifting until high-school. By the time you're a freshman, you'll see that the athletes are jacked, and when you get that age, you'll look a lot bigger. It just has to do with hormones. You're still starting puberty, but as the guys around you get older, they'll work out and get a lot bigger.

Not everyone is like that, most of the time it has to do with genetics and lifestyle choices i guess

Yes but I can't deny that about 90 percent of the boys in my school are very skinny, and sports arent realy popular here.
I don't do any sports, but I still get skinny

Because of your metabolism and your diet. Metabolism is high, meaning that you burn off most calories that you take in and nothing builds up.

Your diet is also probably high in Carbs and not high enough in Fats. You should have lower carbs and higher fats and higher protein to start keeping weight on.

Of course weight training is the definite way to start actually adding weight.

In terms of the purely scientific reason, it basically just comes down to metabolism. Men do not need to store much fat and we have less Estrogen meaning that our body knows that we can burn most of the stuff we have off.
