I thought Vista was the best in computers? Was it an older version?

You asked one question, then gave an answer that has nothing to do with the question. Windows isn't a type of computer. It's an Operating System. :)

I'll answer both then. You asked what type of computer I use, It's just a custom built PC that I put together in Oct. 2005. I don't feel like giving the full specs, but the gist of it is:

Athlon X2 3800+
1GB DDR PC3200 RAM
ATI Radeon X800 PCIe Video Card
1x500GB & 1x250GB HDDs (Both SATA)

As for what operating system I'm running, which I'll assume was your actual question, I'm running XP and Ubuntu. I tried Vista for a little while, didn't like it, so I won't use it. I've used many Linux Distros too, but have decided I prefer Ubuntu.

Right now, my Laptop has XP, My Desktop has XP and Ubuntu, and my Server is running Ubuntu Server (No GUI, all CLI).

Also, you didn't give much of a selection in your poll.

:)

Just because an operating system is the newest, in no way guarantees that it is the best. Some people like Vista over previous versions of Windows. Many do not. Many people would disagree with this statement, but with a fair amount of knowledge about XP and Vista, I can tell you that If you don't NEED Vista for some reason, I wouldn't advise "Upgrading" to it. The only reason I could see is if you needed DX10 Support for Gaming. Vista has that, XP does not. The Aero Effects in Vista aren't impressive at all. Sure, there are other things Vista has, but nothing I feel worthy of mentioning.

There are a lot of Bugs in Vista right now. Hopefully they'll be fixed in various updates before too long. SP1 is coming out soon for it, which will take care of some of them, but not all. One of my issues is changes in functionality in Vista, and how things are accessed. They won't change these in updates.

DDR RAM? Aint That A Bit Old Now?

Note that I mentioned that I built the machine in October of 2005. DDR2 was still relatively new then, and AMD Motherboards didn't support DDR2 then. They didn't support DDR2 until the AM2 Socket motherboards came out. Which, I don't believe happened until Spring of 2006.

In order to upgrade to DDR2, I'd have to purchase a new motherboard and processor. There's no need for me to do that right now, because what I have right now handles 98%+ of what I do just fine.

Ah kk...I was in maplin (computer store) buying parts and I gave the guy a ref number for the memory I wanted (ddr2) and well I got home opening it up and it was not ddr2 it was ddr so i went back explained everything my mum got the manager out coz the guy said I couldnt take it back because memory cannot be returned and eventually I got 4 gb of ddr2 RAM for free. (2 2gb Ram Cards) aint using both atm. might sell the the other one.

My laptop runs on 2gb or DDR2 though.

Cool. I really dunno the difference to be honnest. maybe just a wee bit faster ddr2 is? and a bigger card.

The key difference between DDR and DDR2 is that in DDR2 the bus is clocked at twice the speed of the memory cells, so four words of data can be transferred per memory cell cycle. Thus, without speeding up the memory cells themselves, DDR2 can effectively operate at twice the bus speed of DDR.

XP all the way, and when I get a new computer I might just downgrade to XP unless everything has changed to run only on Vista.

Aηdy

Its a pain in the ass to downgrade to vista, vista uses a different MBR, and it fucks up the XP installation in most cases. But it's not too hard to do.

I'll install Vista again when they release a Service Pack, if it no better then, fuck microshit :P

Wow. Lots of activity in this thread in the past day and a half...

no not really. Once everybody has been fed up with XP Vista will probably take it's place or Mac would

Who is fed up with XP? A lot of people like it. As far as I can tell, a lot more than those who like Vista. XP has been out for about 7 years. It's had many updates, fixes, and time to mature.

Vista will never replace XP.

QFT. (If it does, then I think I'll go cry in a corner about how clueless the world has become.

Maybe next year when like everything starts to work and a proper service pack is realesed

The first service pack was kind of rushed. Basically all it does is fix some bugs. The RC (Release Candidate is out for SP1 for those who want to test it, and the Final should be out before long. I'm running the RC1 of SP1 on a Test Machine I have laying around. I won't run Vista on a normal machine).

I gave it its chance. I actually thought the Pre-Release builds of Vista (Back before the RTM) were better than the RTM and Post RTM builds were. But, I've still never LIKED Vista.

Its giong to take a few years if it ever does.

grrr...microshit being stupid again...there abandoning vista once again...

Well... You'd hope it gets fixed... But, if you take a look at the last several NT Operating Systems and the Number of Service Packs MS released:

NT4: 6
2000: 4
XP: 3 (So far)
2003: (1 so Far)
Vista: ??

It's getting progressively fewer.

THEY SHOULD MAKE IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Lol sorry just annoyed coz vista is sooooooo buggy atm

It's not like they had 6 years to get this right...

Yeah, does anyone Use Linux?

I use it quite a bit. It works. Plain and Simple. There are some draw backs, but those are mainly for the Avid Gamers. If you don't do a huge amount of that, you may be just fine.

My Ubuntu 7.10 Computer works very nicely. It's got CompizFusion set up (Similar to Vista's Aero, except 3000+% better, and oh so many more features). There are alternative Software programs out there for Linux (And many of the same pieces of software that work with Windows) that you can install on Linux (Most are Free) that do the same thing that the Windows counterpart does, sometimes better. Not always, but sometimes.

Yeah dont u have to pay for service packs? there like £40 right?

Nope. All Service Packs are Free. There are some cases when a whole new release of a similar basic operating system has occurred, where you had to buy the updated version if you wanted it. Like, for example, with Windows 98 First Edition, and Windows 98 Second Edition.

The XP SP2 only affected security issused for the most part. So don't hope for too much.

SP2 did fix a lot of bugs, but it also added things, like the Security Center, and changed some of the Networking Dialogs displayed, and other things. I've always noticed SP2 to run better, faster, and more stable than Pre-SP2 XP did.

They are releasing XP SP3 in 2008 im pretty sure. I heard its going to be better in Vista in many ways

Yes, 2008. The RC1 is out right now for XP SP3. I'm actually running it right now (And have been since the end of November) on this machine. Works flawlessly.

There's not really any added features in SP3. The main one is the Windows Activation Model is being changed to what they now use in Vista. So, you aren't required to enter a product key when you install anymore. You have the option of doing it afterward. This SP is mainly fixes.

I'm on Vista Business for my desktop, Vista Home premium for my laptop, both are Acer Aspire units.

I did hate vista at first due to drivers not being out with all my recording gear but after a few months and even now I like it a lot and don't mind sticking with it.

My only gripe is I need a ton of RAM to run this OS

I'm planning a studio upgrade soon and may have to go back to XP if drivers are not made for my new gear.
