What if instead of the administrators and moderators choosing new mods, they select a list of say 10 possible candidates and have the users vote for who they think should be the new mod?

Thought this might be a nice change!! Let me know what you guys think :)

I don't know... I think it would become a popularity contest. People would inevitably see things a little too subjectively, which is one reason why traditionally, staff are usually the ones choosing new staff members; it's their job to be objective and put the site's best interests ahead of their own when picking new staff members (usually, anyway). Plus, candidates might go around campaigning, bribing, and pleading for undeserved votes.

That's why I added the part of the staff putting together the list of candidates to vote from lol. So than it's fair for both sides. I do see where you're coming from with that last part though. About undeserved votes

I don't think a democracy would work out too well. on here. It'd be a popularity contest. It's a good thought though! :)

Uh no. It's best to leave the decision to the senior staff.

Exactly this. ^ If we enforced that idea this place would be in ruins.

Hey, good idea. I do like it but I'm half and half on this. It could work and it could go horribly wrong.... Nice suggestion though :D

Another thing is, you say out of 10 people. Sometimes, well, the majority of the time there isn't actually 10 people that are good enough for staff and so in realistic terms it'd need to be a smaller number if this did actually happen. 10 is too ambitions.

This wouldn't work, it would become like politics, you would have people asking others to vote for them, people would just vote for people they like. Mods don't need to be popular, they need to do an effective job

Picking staff via a popularity contest wouldn't be a very good idea. I mean I doubt many people who are mods today or have been a mod in the past would have been picked if we did this method of testing.
