My friend and I—I'll call him Stephen—were inseparable in middle school. We were the best of friends, we were in school together, went on ski trips. In fact, he was my closest male friend. Freshman year we talked barely that September. My girlfriend of (then) three months broke up with me the August before. She and I had huge problems and Stephen hated that. He wanted us to get along. And then, no one blamed her because...never mind. Anyway, it was a while before she and I became friends again. Since 8th grade, really, Stephen and I haven't really spoke like we used to. I know, things change and that's fine with me. That's the background.
It's now the end of sophomore year, I saw him a few times go in and out of Lighthouse, which is our school 'extra-help'—if you will—counseling. There is normal counseling, then there's Lighthouse. It helps with kids that are trying to get sober or kids that are trying to heal from emotional trauma or imbalance, etc., but not kids with disabilities. I knew Stephen to get impatient easily. When we spoke the small amount in the September of freshman year, he mentioned how his parents weren't getting along. That was the last I heard. I'm thinking he didn't take a potential divorce well, and that's why he's in Lighthouse. I don't know anything though. I talked to my ex, and she says that the divorce was part of it (so I was right, they divorced), but she didn't know much either.
Now, I want to ask Stephen if all is well, but I'm not sure if he wants to speak with me, since we haven't since last year. I still care about my friends even if we've been distant. What do you think? Should I talk to him? If so, what should I say?
