Is it as safe as straight sex? What are factors I should look out for?

As long as you wear condoms It's just as safe. Use lube, and wear a condom, thats all you need to do. (Also, go slow, or it will prob. be painful)

No, gay sex isn't as 'Safe' as straight sex. Aside from the increased risk of AIDS, remember that the anus wasn't designed for the type of heavy thrusting associated with sex, so there's increased risk for damage there, too.
Regardless of the type of sex you engage in, always wear a condom (and make sure it's put on correctly, most condom failures occur because of misuse).

The risk for HIV, obviously, is only there if the person you're having sex with is HIV-positive. The only real answer to this question is, "depends." Unprotected straight sex with someone whose medical status you don't know is a lot more dangerous than protected gay sex with someone with updated testing.

All STD's are transmitted when the body fluids of an infected person are passed to an uninfected person. So, wearing a condom keeps the fluids seperate, thereby eliminating the possibility of infection (if the condom is used properly).
Having sex is a choice. Wearing a condom shouldn't be.
