Whether masturbation is seen as acceptable and healthy or not -- everyone has the right to privacy on what they do behind closed doors.
It's possible their sexuality and choices is their business and being asked or hearing other discuss masturbation is violating ones boundaries.
Is it a privacy issue?
Is it a possible self confidence issue?
Do they feel ashamed or guilty?
Is it an issue of a girl not trusting others with her "secret"?

It could be any of those -- maybe a combination or something else.
