View Full Version : Historical Fiction story ideas, trying to pick from one.

Hiyas.

I'm been thinking and planning out the very basics of three different ideas for an adventure based historic–fiction that I am thinking about writing. I love them all, and I think eventually I will do all three if I stick out with being an amateur writer, But I think that I will at least do one at a time to get my feet wet a little.

Without further ado, these are the ideas that I came up with.

1: "Dark Clouds" It is the year 666 A.D. From the east, A powerful nation is born and rising fast, a nation that believes in demonic rituals and worships Satan. With this new power ever so growing, both Christians and Molsems are in united, blind fear from this new nation and call a dual Crusade/Jihad against the unholy nation. The story follows Bennett (A name I am using right now), a young, better off peasant turned adventurer in the surprisingly liberal and secular (for the time, anyways) Kingdom of Albion. He must choose sides from both internal and external factions and people within Albion in order to defend his home

2: "Terra Australis" It is around the 1500's, and many nations are exploring new lands. One day, a ship and its crew that sailed too far down south in the Atlantic discover a new continent. Instead of the icy wasteland known as Antarctica, they found a new world with breathtaking landscape, unusual flora and fauna and powerful beasts, especially a huge dinosaur–lizard thingy that flies, roars and draws elemental power straight from its mouth like a flamethrower or an over-sized leaf blower, if you catch my drift. The story follows one of the crew members as him and the crew discover "Terra Australis."

3. "Rise of the Crescent" It is 1382, the Black Plague is over and has killed roughly 1/4th of all life of Europe. Entire nationalities like Spanish, Greek, Italian or Portuguese only exist in the 100s or even 10s of numbers. Most of Europe, and Christianity, has retreated to Britain, Northern Germany, Scandinavia and northern Russia. However, Islam, which has now almost doubled the size of Christianity, has started to move into Europe. Most of the Iberian and Greek Peninsulas as well as most of the Mediterranean islands have already become completely Molsem. I do not exactly know how I will try to start this out yet, either as one of the rulers of the Christian nations and his circle and other leaders or as a colonizer for the Caliphate and his crew.

So, what do you guys think? Any suggestions or changes you think that might suit the tone of the stories better? Again, this is only for a popular opinion to do one of these first and I will not choose any of these purely out of this post, and I will also try to find a way to share this with you (for free) after one of these gets done. I appreciate your thoughts :)

I think that I am going to mend these three somehow, in a series so to speak. I am going to start off with the basis of 1 first, then 3 and 2 after that.

I liked the sound of two and three. Good luck with this. It will be a challenge!

The second story sounds like it could develop into something special since there can be so much to it. I'll go with the second one.

Number 2 sounds like it's been done before, 3 has the best potential with the whole survival element

You are spelling muslims wrong, that would be a horrible mistake to see if you were to take options 1 or 3.

Both Moslim and Muslim are correct, but one is more popular over the others.

Hiyas.

As for the OP. Make sure that you do study your subjects, though.

It doesn't have to be completely true to reality, but it should have enough element to pass off as real enough.

I prefer the first one, as there isn't much records about that specific period, you could easily mold it to be a completely fictional story.
The only trade off, is it won't sound as more realistic than the other ones.

As for the second, if you have read enough sea faring adventures, then it should be really good one to start off.
You can add pulp with romance in this one. Focus on building the characters and developing them as they go.
Though this reminds me a bit of Homer's Odyssey.

As for the last one. Now, this needs a bit of work in the history department, and needs extensive research and studying.
It needs well research to pull of the historical realism, as it needs it. Without that, it will be a bland and amateurish tale.

Hi. Just a bit of an update :)

I am currently working on 2, and have already begun typing a draft as we speak, which I am going to release (free!) before July 10th (hopefully) which would most likely be on TeenInk forums or another writers site/forum, which I will post a link to that here when the draft is done. As for the story in general, I do not know necessarily when it will be done, hopefully in the September/November range, A.K.A, :fall: AUTUMN!

I am eventually going to work on 1 and then 3, as they all have equal potential in my book in different ways, but I am going with what I think has the easier creative flow.

Number 2 sounds like it's been done before, 3 has the best potential with the whole survival element

Well, 2 is going to be a big one on survival as well as 3, but to a lesser degree than 2 since in 3 there is at least some basic sense of civilization in Europe rather than 2 which takes place in a completely undiscovered and unique continent. Also, I do not really see how 2 has been done before. Which brings me to...

Though this reminds me a bit of Homer's Odyssey.

I could see how this could be seen, as they both start off similar. However, the basic conflict as well as the time period, the fact that Odysseus was one guy (his crew was short lived) and 2 will cover a whole crew, and also that the Odyssey was a mythical fiction with gods and nymphs and 2 will be a realistic fiction, the two will not be all that similar at all.

You are spelling muslims wrong, that would be a horrible mistake to see if you were to take options 1 or 3.

Actually there both correct. I used Moslem because not only that It is older and relates to the stories, but the word gives a more unique feel than the other and it is spelled somewhat how you are supposed to pronounce it ("Muzlim" is actually the wrong way of pronouncing it, contrary to popular belief, and you say it with a soft s.)

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions, but now, I got a story to be working on! ^_^
