Hai everyone, I was reading this book, and it said in a section:

Another thing that concerned me was the condoms, they had just expired this morning.

No it's not a porn mag or something, shush.

So anyway, condoms expire? How does a condom expire o-o And what happens when it does?

Answers appreciated, thanks :3

No idea. I have read that they expire but I don't know why

The latex degrades over time, using the past their expiration date means they are more prone to break or burst, not something you want to risk. I would throw them away and buy new ones.

Latex is the covering thing right? I didn't know it degrades.. WHy not just use some other material?

Latex rubber is what most condoms are made out of, not the packaging. (some are made out of poly for those allergic to latex) but the overwhelming majority are latex.

Yea, I use condoms made out of Polyutherane because I'm allergic to latex.

Polyutherane? Are they any better than latex?

Please throw the condoms out because for some goofy reason -- they typically don't expire for like 2-3.5 years after they're produced. Not knowing how they were stored -- better to trash 'em and buying new ones will be cheaper than a pregnancy test or even a pregnancy.

Why do they expire? First -- if they're coated with spermicide that in itself can erode the condom [as lotions and other drugs can lose it's potency after time]. Second -- if it's been sitting for years -- was it in a cold or hot environment [that can destroy condoms]

Latex is the best. Not only because it's strong so it won't break, it's also thin so us guys can feel more pleasure. Latex condoms would last normally for a good few years. Any other material would expire a lot faster or wouldn't suit the purpose.

If your condoms are expiring your not using them enough.

I think it's the spermicide that's in them

Its the latex that degrades over time, be safe and throw them away once they expire

Yeah, I actually thought the use-by date was for the spermicide too, not the latex.

Most condoms are made of a polymer they call latex rubber now and not actual latex because:
-A lot of people are allergic.
-This new chemical stuff is thinner apparently and they can sell it for more.
-It doesn't have a natural odour.

That's what my science teacher told us ahaha

Condoms definitely expire, however it can take years. Over time the material be it latex or polyurethane or whatever, will become slightly weakened or its structure compromised. Bottom line.. If you have condoms long enough for them to expire. You haven't had sex in 3 years.
