My mom's thinking about putting me on birth control because I get extremely suicidal and phsychopathic when I'm on my period. Like girls freak out when theyre on their period, I lock myself in the bathroom with a knife until someone breaks the door down, and I've been hospitalized because all my suicide attempts were while I was on my period. So finally, my doctors are realizing it may just be hormonal and that birth control can help it. I'm also going to become sexually active (I'm a virgin, at least in the sense of intercourse)in the next year so I'll definitely be getting it.

But, my mom thinks I should be put on one of those pills that only gives me a period twice a year. Would that be a better protector from pregnancy and STD's than normal birth control pills?

They also want to put me on a low dose of birth control (my doctor doesnt think I should do 2 periods a year) is there a difference in how protected you are by the different strengths of the pills? Like I really don't get what a low dose pill and a higher dose pill would do...

My aunt thinks I shouldnt get on birth control and just stay celibate until I'm ready for a baby, because apparently birth control can kill my ovaries or some shit? o_o my mom was never on birth control, but she didnt have sex until she was 18 which was when she was married and ready for kids so it was a different situation than me..

Also, how do I know if I'm on the right kind of pill//dose before I have sex?
And how long do I have to wait for the pill to take affect? I really don't want to end up pregnant at this point, I'm not going to be ready for like literally a decade...So yeah answers to those questions would ease my mind. thanks!

Remember they say birth control can help your moods not that it will definitely make things better. Did you know that getting on birth control doesn't mean you HAVE to have sex? Birth control can regulate periods whether you're a virgin or not.

NO form of birth control other than condoms reduce the risk of STI's or HIV/AIDS. Lybrel is a pill that stops a period for one year and to what the risks -- side effects -- and effectiveness -- a doctor would be better suited to ask. Also -- I see pill either causing monthly or quarterly [4 times a year] period not just twice.

They also want to put me on a low dose of birth control (my doctor doesnt think I should do 2 periods a year) is there a difference in how protected you are by the different strengths of the pills? Like I really don't get what a low dose pill and a higher dose pill would do...

Please double check with a doctor to find out. A doctor will review your health and determine which form of birth control is best for you and I'd recommend you find out if any family members have had various forms of cancer as that could eliminate birth control options. Is it really a different situation or is it your choice that you don't want to wait until you're 18 or married? Ultimately -- it is your decision to have sex when you feel is the right time emotionally -- financially -- and physically speaking. You should consult with your psychiatrist to see which pills he/she recommends and please make sure if another doctor prescribes it -- they know your health history and medications.

No form of birth control is 100%. Therefore -- your best option is to abstain from sex until you're in a position to handle a possible pregnancy. To possibly decrease the likelihood of pregnancy -- use a condom correctly [read all directions -- look at condom and make sure it doesn't look damaged -- watch where they are stored -- how to put on and take off] and combine it with the pill [yet there still is some risk of pregnancy]. The doctor will tell you how long it'll take for the pill to be totally effective without having to abstain from sex or use a 2nd need of birth control.
