Okay, before you tell me "oh no, the 360 is gonna go obsolete in a couple years or less, get an Xbox One when it comes out" a) I know and b) with the Xbox One, it's not gonna happen. So now that we have that cleared up:
I already have a PS3 which I may upgrade in a couple years but, in the meantime, I've been considering a 360. Mostly because I grew up with the first few Halo games and I haven't been able to finish them because the Xbox I played them on is my brother's and I no longer live with him. Plus a majority of my friends play online on Xbox and I'd like to be able to play with them. So it's for already existing games and multiplayer. I have the money for either a 360 or a PS Vita for my birthday (it comes out the same, I've done my math). This isn't a 360 vs. Vita thread though.
My question is about experiences with Xbox...? I loathe Microsoft in general. I always have; I tend to have problems with their products and they've never been the top of my preferred tech list. I hear horror stories about the red rings of death (saw my brother's 360 Xbox get that) and other various issues and repairs so I'm wary to spend the money at all on a 360? But I want one. I dunno, I'm looking for second opinions from people who aren't crazy Xbox fanboys but someone who can give me an honest opinion about the likelihood of having problems with this thing. Don't get me wrong, I liked Xboxes when I've used them in the past... I just dunno about spending my own money on one.

Every Xbox I've seen has gotten the red ring.
They're just designed to break. Idk.
If I were you, I'd just save the money for something better later.

No matter what shit they say about the xbox one, its gonna be what im gonna get. Really you should just wait for Xbox one.
Don't listen to Charlie. Hes a unicorn.Really if your sure you want to buy 360 at this time ( I wouldn't) you should think about the reasons why. What if your friend buys an Xbox one?

Believe me, they're not. Besides, Xbox Live is compatible across both systems, so that point is irrelevant. And I can already guarantee I'm not getting it. Like I said in my original post which you clearly ignored, that is not what this thread is about because it's not happening. This is purely about the 360 and experiences with that console. Any next gen consoles for me will be in a year or more because I'm not in a hurry to upgrade.

Get a Sega Genesis with the same money. The 360 Slim doesn't get red rings of death, however I still do not recommend you to buy a 360 unless you are looking to have a collection of consoles.

Pfff, a what?
I don't mind having multiple consoles really. I've had three most of my life when I still lived with my dad and we had the Gamecube, 360 and PS3. But that's good to hear about the Slim though.

the Red Ring of Death on the old model 360s is just as likely to happen as the Yellow Light of Death on the Phat PS3s, so unless you are getting it second-hand that's a non-issue.
The 360 is a pretty good console. Pair it with Kinect for Skype and voice control and you have a pretty cool gaming console that doubles as a video-phone and a Netflix + DVR machine. There are plenty of really cheap games by now so you can start playing the likes of Alan Wake and Banjo-Kazooie really cheap.
You could also consider getting the subsidized ones. It works like a phone contract, where you pay a monthly fee but you get the hardware for considerably less. They have them on all GameStops and the Microsoft Store as well. If you have the money and can pay for it upfront, do it. You can get a year of Xbox LIVE for much cheaper than the contract's monthly payments.

...okay, this is slightly off-topic but it's my thread so whatever. What is the yellow light of death on the Phat PS3s? 'Cause I have the original model from '06 and I've never heard of that. ._.

It's the exact same thing as the 360's Red Ring of Death: a general hardware failure. If you get it, there's nothing to do, you have to send it in to have it replaced. Most PS3's that get YLoD do so well into their 2nd year so most warranties don't cover it and the slow adoption rate of the PS3 stopped the problem from getting much attention from anyone, but it is a thing. I have had both a 360 RRoD and a PS3 YLoD.

Oh, well, my PS3 is over six years old now so I guess if it happens it's long overdue, lol. Thanks. Didn't know that's how you could tell.

Yeah I just had my old PS3 YLoD a couple months ago (had left it with my parents as their primary Blu-ray player) just after the extended warranty expired, about as long as my 360 lasted but thanks to Microsoft's 3-year warranty, they replaced it for free and haven't had another issue with it. That one is now my brother's and he uses it for gaming all the time.
Personally I think owning more than one console is well worth it. If you can think of at least 3 games you would play on it or if you have friends to play with on Xbox LIVE, then its a definite yes.
I would personally recommend everything Rare has made for the 360: Banjo-Kazooie (all 3 games), Kameo: Elements of Power, Perfect Dark (both), Viva Pinata (all 3) and Kinect Sports (both). They are all pretty fun, Nintendo-style games that everyone can enjoy and in my opinion are worth the price of admission for a Microsoft console.
