Just because I want to open up a can of worms and whining!
Post some artists/bands you think are overrated.
The potential for a huge flame festival is here so I would kindly remind everyone that music is a matter of personal taste and people don't have to like or dislike the music you do.
Now since I said I was opening a can of worms I'll go ahead and say what in my list is the Nr 1 overrated band and probably get flamed to hell for doing it but here goes:
The Beatles.

Almost every "top 40" artist around today. None of these pop stars are writing their own music, none of them are playing any of the music themselves, their voices are incredibly enhanced and a good number of them don't actually perform live.
Rihanna, Ke$ha, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, etc.
WickedWeekend

Justin Bieber, One Direction, Big Time Rush, Carly Ray Jepsen, Ke$ha, and Taylor Swift.
Not to mention many artists featured in today's mainstream rap.

The Beatles.
yeah nobody tops the Beatles in terms of overrated music that people pretend to listen to in terms of trying to look cool and act like they know something..
Same goes for Bob Marley "fan's", Metallica too... And even though I enjoy them, I have to say Pink Floyd is extremely overrated and a lot of people pretend to like them with only knowing a few songs or two albums (The Wall + Dark Side, maybe WYWH, nothing else usually).
damn do i hate when people wear bob marley shirts and i bet that's the only raggae musician they know of and they don't even own a CD or anything by him... fucking rude to do that to someone's name, then again he's not that impressive anyways IMO

I'll be honest, I think all musicians are kind of overrated, yeah I love listening to them, yeah Bob Marley is awesome (own all his albums, Jimmy Cliff too), but when someone can be a fan of a musician they've never actually heard a song by, then that artist has become way too big. I saw my cousin with a Beatles t-shirt saying they're awesome but he's never heard a single song by them. That's pretty bad. Again, love music, the artists can be inspirations, but what's the big deal really? There's a point where liking an artist gets ridiculous (anyone remember cut for Beiber?).

Nobody is mentioning the overrated youtubers that get like 10 million views just because they are hot and not because they are good, for example:
megannicolesite, TiffanyAlvord, KurtHugoSchneider, MattyBRaps, and more.
EDIT - I looked at the other posts and people are just being biased towards the music they prefer and not just who they think is overrated.

Just because people wear Beatles shirts doesn't mean that they are overrated. It just means that they are commercial. I mean look at some of the later stuff by George Harrison, that was really cutting edge for the 60's, he pretty much introduced the Sitar into mainstream British music

Well, I'm not going to bitch about today's charts music in general, because I think it's pretty obvious that there are a whole lot of overrated artists.
Other overrated artists/bands in my opinion are for example Metallica, RHCP, MCR and BVB.
And even though I love both bands, I have to admit that Green Day and Linkin Park are kinda overrated (especially since Linkin Park's new stuff is played over and over again on the radion).

No one even said Taylor Swift? Come on now, she might be able to write good songs, but that's all she should be doing. She can't even sing live. She's also gone from this goody country singer to dating every celeb on the planet just so she can write another dissing song when SHE breaks up with the guy in a week.

Christina Aguilera? Seriously? And then you proceed to justify that One Direction isn't there because they can sing, which implies that Christina can't ._. Yes it's a matter of opinion but it's undeniable that Christina has one of THE best voices in our current generation. If anything she's underrated, her fall to obscurity after her Back to Basics years despite having vocal abilities that exceeds the likes of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna etc. proves it.

Not sure if you're trolling, and forgive me for this incoming outburst, but: WHERE ARE YOUR EARS?! Only a few people can match her vocals, such as Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey and the late Whitney Houston.
OK in the end it's just a matter of opinion and you don't have to like Xtina, but I really don't think it's right to dismiss her vocal abilities that are undeniably impressive as in this case it is no longer a matter of opinion but a fact.

I agree with Madie. I, too, surprised nobody said Taylor Swift. I also think Justin Bieber is overrated. And any other artist who either does not: sing without too much enhancement, write their own music, play their own music (like using synths too much), or sing live without a backing track that is overpowering. Also, I think a lot of rap artists are overrated because they don't really sing (which is what attracts me) and that they have really questionable lyrics. True, some rock groups are a bit overrated, but I believe mostly pop and rap artists are the overrated ones. Granted, a few pop songs here and there are actually pretty good, and there is this one Eminem song (God, what is the title?? grr...) that was really nice, but overall it's overrated in my opinion.

John Lennon is an amazing singer along with Paul McCartney. Ringo is a great drummer. George is a good song writer and when he sings leader he has a great voice and is about fine subjects. Their songs make me happy to wake up and live and make me feel happy when I am not.

Symphony For the Devil tells a story about the frickin written as if he was the devil. Rolling Stones songs are very well written and Mick Jagger has fantastic vocals. Not to mention Keith Richards guitar. They may not be the greatest rock n roll band ever but they a very high up their.

He gets the most attention because his lyrics are amazing, and so is his voice. There might be better singers then him, and better songwriters, but not both at the same time.
The only other singer/songwriters I like are James Arthur, Phillip Phillips, and Hunter Hayes. Who are underrated.

I think Mariana's Trench and 2Chainz (?) are overrated. The 'hipsters' of my school all seem to consider that a requirement, and all of the rap fans seem to enjoy 2 Chainz, though from the few songs I've heard of him, I don't really like him.

Jay-Z is a rap legend, name another rapper that has been around since the early 90's that is still making bangers. I'm not the biggest Jay-Z fan, but he sure does have some classics.
How is Kanye overrated? I'll admit, he hasnt made a lot of good quality material ever since 06-07, though College Dropout and Late Registration are some of the best hip hop albums in my opinion. Kanye has some pretty deep songs such as Heard Em' Say, Homecoming, Jesus Walks. Old Kanye(2004-2008) was bomb...
The most overrated artist is Macklemore in my opinion, I dont really like how I see people who dont know two jack shits about hip hop saying Macklemore is the "Best rapper ever" or "Best rapper out right now". He shouldnt even be considered a rapper, hes a pop artist that has hip hop themes.
Lil Wayne is overrated, just complete utter garbage that gives hip hop a bad name. He is the reason why a lot of people always bash hip hop.

How is overrated?
I don't like rap in general, so my opinion is slightly biased. But, the stuff I've heard, it wasn't my thing. I like Eminem's stuff better tbh.

Have you tried to sway away from mainstream radio trash? It's plenty of good rappers in the Underground scene...

tbh every rapper except Eminem, most pop artists, Swedish House Mafia way overrated to me they killed Eurodance. Taylor Swift can be alright but yes she's quite overrated, Katy Perry (terrible live), Some Indie Artists (not Ed Sheeran, I like him). Sometimes 1D and sometimes Justin Bieber.

I feel like Ed Sheeran isn't overrated, it's just he's soooo mainstream and too many people like him just because he's popular. Also, Lil' Wayne, and Nicki Minaj. Please don't even try to justify their "music."

ED IS NOT MAINSTREAM! He's popular, but not mainstream. Ed is really humble, and is still the same guy he used to be, the music industry hasn't changed him. Besides, the reason people like him is because his voice is perfect lol.

Ed, is and always will be, perf. :wub:But it just depends on the genre of music you listen to. Most things you're going to hear are the ones like Nicki Minja, Just Beiber, One Direction, etc. because they're in the limelight singing poppy (if not sometimes senseless) songs. But I listen to a lot of different types...it all just depends.
But I will never ever for the life of me understand how in the heck 2 Chainz even weasled his way into the music industry. That's just...no.

Except he IS mainstream. ;) Just because he doesn't sing pop music or he's not on the top of the charts doesn't mean he's not mainstream. His music is played on mainstream radio, and he's worked his artists such as One Direction and Taylor Swift. Ed's a great musician, but he's hardly a hipster.
I think all artists are overrated to some degree. If you've heard of them, they're overrated. Overrated doesn't mean 'bad' though, which I think people tend to forget.

1D and Justin Beiber come to mind instantly, but aside from them, maybe the Beach Boys...even though they're from the 60s. xD
I'd like to add that I think Beethoven is an overrated composer...Not to say that he isn't great, but there are many other composers that, in my opinion, were way better than him.

Overrated means to overestimate the merits of, or to rate too highly. SO, in my opinion, if someone is a great musician, they can't be overrated. Therefor, I think that anyone who uses an obvious amount of auto-tune is overrated, because I don't think there is any real talent there.

^ Part of me actually doesn't think such a thing exists, but maybe someone has an artist to prove me wrong.
I'm going through my iTunes library and literally every single one is either overrated or underrated.

I think Gaga's overrated as an act. Like, she's the biggest pop star in the world, how can she NOT be overrated? But I actually think her talent is underrated. She can actually sing very well and is involved in every part of the creative process, yet so many people think of her as Britney Spears 2.0.

I wouldn't say she's the BIGGEST pop star in the world anymore she's been gone for so long I'd say maybe Rihanna or maybe Katy perry is the biggest pop star now.

Record companies sign them for their looks, write songs for them to "sing", tune them up in the studio, and send them out to lip sing on stage. It's a win-win for both of them. The record company gets money, and the artist gets to becom famous.
