hey I was just wondering if you can delete accounts? I know you dont allow it and why you dont allow it, but if a situation was created and a user really wanted there account deleted, do you habe the power to?

I mean yeah we can but we don't.

It doesn't matter if a user really wants it or whatever, we just don't. But to answer your question, we could.

We usually tell people to either log out and never come back, or change their password to gibberish.

Deleting accounts would leave too many gaps

I know I'm not a mod... but I know a few things. :D

No. If you go to the super old archives, and find users from like 2007, you'll see that their last activity was in 2008 or something like that... So no, they aren't ever banned. They just never post, so you need to really search around to see them.

Wonder.

You can request to be frozen (and maybe request to be banned but I'm not sure), but you have to have a reason such as you really want to focus on school and you find yourself on VT too often or something like that.

As said, we will occasionally freeze people on request. It's rare that we ban on request. This is because once you're banned, you're banned. If you request a ban and you end up wanting to come back, you can't. banned is banned. But yeah. If you need to focus on school or something, we will freeze you for a bit and when your freeze is over, you can come back.

What do you mean by an 'online security threat'? What could possibly be so serious that we would need to delete their account? They could get rid of details if they needed to or we could ban them if they threatened us. As I said, we could delete someone, but we likely wouldn't.

Is this a VT thing or a software thing? I'm on another forum that once used this same software and I thought I saw people unbanned.

Then again, it could depend on any modifications that the other place installed.

VT thing. It IS possible to unban someone who is banned (allowable by pretty much all forum softwares), but 99% of the time VT will not unban you if you are banned. But it's 99% not 100% because I think there were a few members who were banned but got unbanned and returned here.

Well, there are exceptions to everything. I mean say I banned you, and I was wrong, you'd be unbanned. We do have a banappeal email address, which users can email if they're banned. Their case will be looked at, and if it's enough, they'll be unbanned. I don't know exactly how often it happens, but I guess it likely has before.

So it's a VT thing I guess - we /could/ unban people, but one banned for a reason, and it'd be pretty silly to unban people yeah?

Think of it as a jail sentence - when you get frozen, it's like you're in jail and then you get released, but when you get banned, it's like you're in jail for life, but there's occasionally the possibility of parole.

Good point. Suppose I mess up today and you freeze me for a week. Then say I mess up three years from now and I catch a different moderator on a bad day and I'm done. Well, I've been good for three years, so I'd say my case is strong.

That email address also sheds light on it. It *could* happen, but probably a 1% chance at very most.

FWIW, original person, I believe you can still read when frozen. If banned, IDK.
