Yeah, I've witnessed this before. It may be because someone truly doesn't understand, but either way it's wrong to assume that anyone that self-harms is attention-seeking. Self-harming is a serious matter that shouldn't be taken lightly. While I do know people who have self-harmed solely for the purpose of attention, very, very few cases are like that. If there is something really bothering you, I'd recommend talking to a GP about it and try to get it resolved or a diagnosis (if you think this is the result of depression). Either way, self-harming is a serious matter and should be taken so.

That's not uncommon. People are jerks and don't understand. I don't even think I understand it either, but that doesn't mean I pick on people... Best of luck.

Yeah, I got it a couple times when I started wearing short sleeves, because of the scars on my arms. I'd never really thought of it that way--It was cold when I started, so I just always wore long sleeves, and they were hidden just fine. But my arms have always been the place I self-harmed...I've heard of people using their legs, shoulders, etc, but I always felt the urge on my arm, so that's where I did it in the past. Has anyone else felt that way?

My brother use to get it, I use to think he was attention seeking... Till I found out what he was upset about.... Then I felt guilty....

I get it every single day. It's annoying. Most people don't do it for attention.

It's pretty common. Although I'll admit I did do it for attention once - when I was in my last year at school I cut myself in the canteen so a certain teacher would notice and reach out to me. I was so horribly depressed at the time that I stopped caring.

Attention seeking can very well be a factor, but to say its the sole reason is absurd. If that was the case then we wouldn't see so many cutters wearing long sleeves and sweaters to hide the scars. You must also be honest with yourselves, if you really wanted to die you would've killed yourself by now. It's not hard to tie a noose if you honestly believe you have the right reasons. The fact you stop at just cutting shows you have at least some reasons to live. For the most part, I see cutting as a cry for help rather than actual attention seeking. However if you're parading around showing everyone your cuts and how hardcore you are, then attention seeking might be a problem...

If you really don't do it for attention, and no I do not think you do, then its very unfair of the bully. Just try to remember that you can be stronger then this
