Windows 8 makes me want to cry.

I'm waiting for Windows 8.1 to get rid of the metro aspect of it. I don't know why they even thought of adding a touchscreen features to a computer that doesn't have touchscreen capabilities.

Though, I am completely in love with the start up time. It takes under 20 seconds. :D

Windows 7 Ultimate FTW.

Windows 8 has additional security features (including enterprise-level anti-virus built in), much faster load times (can start up in as little as 10 seconds on an HDD, or as little as 5 seconds on an SSD, ready to use), lower footprint (uses less system resources so anything you run will run better), and an amazing and useful start menu that now is full screen and you can go in and out in a second.

But best of all, they got rid of the multiple version BS and the slow service pack release schedule. There are only 2 versions: standard and Pro, and for most people, Standard is all you need. And monthly service packs solving any compatibility issues and adding new features.

There's really no reason to stay behind on the ancient Win7.

Windows 7 Ultimate is a lot better in my eyes,
windows 8 from my experience is terrible.

I use Windows 8 on PC and Windows 7 on my laptop. The only advantage to 8 is the super fast start up time. And to be honest, that's the only thing that annoyed me on Windows 7. It loaded up slower than a system running on XP.

But 8 isn't very stable, and the new UI sucks. To put it simply - Metro sucks. I'm looking forward to Windows Blue, which I hope will fix any of the kinks 8 suffered from, and thankfully has a Boot-to-Desktop option which will make Metro redundant.

I like 7. It's more classic feeling. And I have software that only runs on 7 that I need to use.
8 is too colorful and boxy.
I don't really care how long it takes to boot up (as long as it's less than a minute.
My Mac takes forever.

I hate people who say they hate using windows 8 when they maybe haven't used it for more then 10 minutes....

Once you get used to it, it is excellent. Yes, it has does have some touchscreen features, but they make absolutely no difference, you can do it all with your mouse, and even so there is nothing 'more' to do. The metro design looks great with everything cycling round on my 3 screens, but whilst people are saying they do like it, it is not Windows RT! You are not confined to it, you just go to the desktop and use it like Windows 7 (apart from its faster and better....), I personally don't use the Start Screen very much, as I jump straight into the desktop, and if I need to open a program, then I can press the Windows keyboard button, type in the program name and press enter, which takes very little time once you get used to it.

As I said, it does have the touchscreen features and other things that I don't use, such as the app store, which I don't need as I use it as a normal 'Windows 7' computer and not as a tablet/touchscreen PC. Once you become accustomed to Windows 7, as people had to do from XP to 7, and 200 to XP etc, you become much faster and use the features better and more efficiently, I can use a Windows 8 PC much faster then a 7.

And I have software that only runs on 7 that I need to use.

Windows 8 runs all the Windows 7 programs fine, there is no need for the developer to update the program for 8.

THIS!

Also, like he said, if it runs on Windows 7, it runs on Windows 8 either just as good, or even better on 8, since 8 is a better, faster and slimmer 7.

I agree with everyone about the fast W8 startup time. It is the best. Like a lot of people, I hate the Metro UI, so I just launch Desktop right away.

I didn't bother loading any of the Start menu replacement utilities, since I don't miss it like I thought I would. I just pin the apps that I use all the time to the Taskbar and launch them from there.

If I right click the lower left corner of the screen, that brings up a menu with a lot of the important things, so I'm happy with that.

My only complaint is that MS put the power button in Settings. Move mouse to the corner, click, click and click. That is so much faster! It is easy to create a shortcut to replace it, so this is not a big deal.

Windows 8.

and I actually like the Metro look.
plus those little messages windows 8 gives like when my laptop's battery is low and it's all sassy with "You may want to plug in your PC"

idk it kinda gives the computer personality or something haha

Windows 8! I recently upgraded and was surprised! The Metro theme is nice and the inferface is nice and easy to use and its simple. It has a lot of performance fixes! The startup times and shutdown are excellent!

I would go with win8!

I was very used to 7 for the longest time. About 2 months ago I got a new laptop which had 8. It was a MAJOR change. I really enjoy the Windows 8, but I want it seems to be a 7/8 mix which bugs me. Having the Desktop AND Start screen annoys me. My Chrome and Skype keep switching between the desktop and 8 versions. If they got rid of the desktop and fixed the minor bugs, I would be very happy with 8.

Windows 7 full stop.

UNLESS you have a touch screen or tablet PC, then it is debatable.

My four year old laptop running Windows 7 died a few months ago and I brought a Windows 8 laptop to replace it. I had that thing for two weeks and I really disliked it, the whole modern UI was not for me. So, after the two weeks, I ended up returning it (and I even paid the damn $150 restocking fee) and just paid the $ to get my old Windows 7 laptop fixed. I will not go back to Windows 8.

I agree. I went and tried some windows 8 devices at staples today.
It is a great os for a tablet or touch screen laptops like a Microsoft surface tablet thingy, but when it comes to a large desktop PC, it just feels not right. It is too painted and polished to look pretty, and it lacks a logical, technical layout. (i guess is the best way to say it).
For the desktop PC I'm going to make, I'm definitely going to go with windows 7. :)

Just because its tablet based doesn't mean only touch screen PC's should use it. I had Windows 8 for some time, the only reason I went to Windows 7 was because it couldn't run Minecraft, even with the video drivers for Windows 7 installed. Since coming back to Windows 7, I've noticed how substantially faster Windows 8 was in booting, running software and software performance.

Big mistake. The only difference between the two UI-wise is that the start menu is now full screen, the power-user options are still there just slightly faster. Go to the start menu and start typing what you want and it actually finds it faster than 7 ever did. What layout is it lacking? Once you go to the desktop is just 7 done better and faster.

But hey if you wanna waste your money by going for top of the line hardware paired with an old OS you are free to do so.

I have had no issues running Minecraft whatsoever on several different Windows 8 setups (all different hardware and GPU vendors, all worked as good as Minecraft can). Did you check you were using an up to date version of both Minecraft and Java?

I've used windows 7 a lot. I am used to the layout, it is fast enough for me. I like the classic start menu. I like it therefore I'm going to continue using it.
I tried windows 8. I don't particularly see anything worth spending another hundred bucks for. I don't like the tile start menu, and I don't like the metro interface. Therefore I'm not interested in using it.

How is going with what I know and like wasting money?

You are going for the old, bloated OS, getting less performance out of the expensive hardware you are buying because you don't like how something looks, ignoring the fact that you can also change that and customize it to your liking. The start menu and the metro interface are the same, and you don't have to use it if somehow you aren't good enough with computers to learn how to use it (takes about 30 second for my grandma to get used to it xD)

Any self-respecting PC gamer would appreciate the extra performance, even if it was a single extra frame per second (and is quite more than that).

Besides, stereo-3D gaming and native multi-monitor support is only available on DirectX 11.1 and onwards, which means is only available with Windows 8 and above. Games that want to have native support for both without going with hardware-specific implementations can only do so with DX11.1

The thing Microsoft needs to understand about Windows 8 is... a PC should not have the Xbox 360 dashboard when you start it up.

FantaSauce
June 2nd, 2013, 03:09 AM
Why not? The only reason that the xbox has it it for the kinect, And because it's made by microsoft. The phone has it because it's a touch screen, Windows 8 was idealised for touch screen users to make each section easier to touch so for that purpose it makes quite a lot of sense

I think windows 8 is much better. That being said, I'm a person who likes sleek, well-designed interfaces. If you really hate the metro, get something like start8. I for one, do like it though.

Found the same using my boyfriends win 8 laptop. Did not like using it at all. I speed up the boot on my Win 7 by disabling the unnecessary start up programs. How much memory you have also affects boot time. Here is the app that makes it fast and simple CCleaner . http://www.piriform.com/download

I've only got my hands on Win8 for about a half a day, with my step-sister's computer, and to say the least, I prefer Win7. I think Win8 is a good system, but it's a bit confusing for me. You could bring up the argument, "Oh Nick, you could learn." Well, I believe after using Microsoft OS pretty much all my life, I'd say it shouldn't be too hard for me to learn if Microsoft had actually made it a bit easier to use. I think if you have been using Win7 before Win8, it shouldn't have much of a learning curve. But alas, Microsoft ignores this little fact.

Once you get past the fact of learning the OS, it is a great operating system. I didn't get to play with it too much, but I like it. At the end of the day, I'd still rather be on Win7.

Really it depends on what your using it for. If you are using it for a family, then 7 is better. 8 has so many apps and the different start menu that makes it better for a single person to use. 8 is also better if you have a touchscreen computer
