I am currently in the process of saving up enough money to build myself a pc and I'd like to know how many of you have or want to.

Oh I meant assemble it. Yeah I would like to build one. I have rebuilt my laptop after disassembling it.

You mean literally, build it with my own two hands? Nope, I've never done that, but I've never bought a PC from an electronics store. I bought the parts on my own, and just paid the guy at the store to put them together. :P

But, I've disassembled it and put it together again. I've taken out the CPU, the HDD, the motherboard...it's no big deal. It's fun. :D

I have built over 10 by now, built everyone's computers in my family. Right now I am in the middle of upgrading them all to Windows 8 :D

Next computer I buy will probably be either a Surface Pro or a Razer Edge Pro, so no custom specs for now from me until 2 years from now at least :P

You buy the parts, a license to Windows (or any other OS you might want) and then start putting everything together. Is a lot simpler than it sounds and looks really.

I have, in fact. And I'm rather fond of it, too.

The cheapest essential part(that I didn't have lying around) was the motherboard - $50 for a SuperMicro P4SCE (http://www.halted.com/commerce/catalog/product.jsp?product_id=22529&czuid=1369719486633). That came with a power supply(240W if I remember correctly), and a 1U case.
Of course, you still need everything else. All prices are from 3 years ago, which is when I put it together.

A DVD drive that shouldn't cost more than $30.
A floppy drive that's 2 years older than I am - had it laying around, probably $8 by now(optional :P)
A 500GB HDD - had it laying around, about $60.
Some standard desktop case from a brand I don't remember - $50, can be cheaper
DDR1 RAM, 3GB total - $60
Stupid CPU sockets and fans - $20 total, I think
550W PSU - my dad gave it to me from his old computer, no idea how much that costed
PCI(not PCIE or anything - standard PCI) graphics card, GeForce 5500 FX with 256MB VRAM - $30 or so
Your favourite GNU/Linux distribution - free

So in total that's about $406 if you include everything. And that's prices from 3 years ago. By now it's probably cheaper.

Thank you :)
It would have been quite something several years ago, but as consumer technology advances more and more, this becomes more and more outdated. But it suits my purposes just fine, so I have no plans to replace it. If I do, it will probably be a very similar one.

lol. I bet the graphics power is over 9000.

On what scale?
I can play some games(provided they use the OpenGL on the graphics card and not software rendering), and they run surprisingly fast.

Yeah I'm looking at somewhere in that price range but I face the universal problems of empty-wallet-itis and chronic-couch-potatoe-syndrome.

What Motherboard do you use? I have almost the same fit, except I use a Sabertooth 990FX (uhh I just came <3) and I have two Terabyte HDDs, Yeah I know its slower than an SSD but as soon as its pulled off the drive I can run most programs off RAM. I forget what Case I have, I think its a Phantom 820. My PC is at my dads so I don't know for sure.

My parents built my first ever PC, it was good, I couldn't tell you the specs as I was only 12/13 at the time but it ran well. I then have always gotten laptops since then.

So I haven't technically built one. If I had the money and time I might but I'm not into gaming on the PC or graphics creations so a mega PC isn't something I need.

I built mine late July last year and have kept upgrading as I go along. It started off as this:

AMD FX 4100 3.6GHz Quad Core
8GB Corsair Value RAM (FTW!)
Corsair CX600 600watt PSU
Zalman Z11 Plus Chassis
ASUS M5A97 Motherboard
Seagate 7200 1TB Hard Drive
XFX Radeon HD 6570
Cheapo Dell Monitor
Cheapo Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse
Pioneer DVDRW+/- Drive

Upgrades since then:
HIS Radeon HD 7870
Samsung Blu-Ray Drive
Samsung HD 3D monitor
Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard
OCZ Vertex 4 64GB SSD
A new fan

I'm thinking of an upgrade soon. Any suggestions?

I want to, although I haven't yet had the change nor the funds. By the time I go to university though I'll have enough saved up and the time to do it, so I hope to build a desktop computer to stay in my room, to do the longer stuff, essays and such, as it won't need to be portable. I will, of course, still use my laptop, which I'll probably attempt to upgrade at the same time.

Gah, its is miles easier then you would think! It's like a giant lego model, but without the crap instructions. Everything has a different slot shape, and there are millions of tutorials on the web. I could take apart and reassemble a computer when I was 5 (which I did do multiple times xD)

I would have loved to build a computer... It would be nice to do so... I've fully customized my computer to where it's no where near like the factory version. But never built one from ground up. Good luck to you!

I still have to learn how to actually assemble and everything, do some finalization of all the parts (might hold off on the SSD and CPU cooler for a little bit).
