View Full Version : Am I a Diabetic?

Lately i've noticed a few things going on, before I continue. My mother has diabetes, so I know it's possible that I may have it too. What i'm concerned about, is that lately, I've been peeing MORE than usual and I've also noticed that I'm eating more and drinking more. Problem is, I'm a 15 year old boy, is it puberty? Am I going through another phase for food? I know that older teens eat alot. It's definitely a POSSIBILITY I have diabetes, however, myself alone. I am not convinced I am a diabetic.

The reason being, the amount I have been urinating lately has risen, but this is only to roughly 4 times a day. I normal pee once or twice, and I have also read that more frequent urination can be caused by dehydration. I have been drinking very little lately. And I took up a large bottle of water an hour or so ago and I am still quite thirsty. So, does anyone believe I have potential diabetes? I cannot goto a doctor at this time, I will be going to a doctor soon enough for other reasons so perhaps I can get a blood test then. (My other reasons for going to the doctor has nothing to do with any relations to diabetes.)

Well urine only has one effect on diabetes. I would get tested!

In my opinion, you should make an appointment to get checked. Just incase...

If you have a family history of diabetes, it doesn't seem unlikely for you to have it. However, I can't tell if you have the condition from here on my PC, nor do any of us here on VT probably have the medical skill to determine if you have diabetes. I strongly suggest you get checked up at the doctor as soon as you possibly can. It's in your best interest to do so. Best of luck!

Get your mom to do a sugar check on you with her glucometer. If your sugar is high, then go see the doctor.

I second this 100%.

I'm going to assume that you're worried you may have type ! diabetes (yes, there's more than one type). I have type 1 and I was diagnosed when I was 6, so you should get checked because drinking and eating a lot are common effects of having prolonged high-bloodsugar for anyone from a six year old girl (like I was when diagnosed) to a teenage boy. :)

I'm sorry, this is probably a bad idea. Using another's glucometer is close to heroin users sharing hypodermic needles with each other. Plus, results could get mixed, like your mom's scores might influence your own, which makes it inaccurate.

It's quite obvious that I cannot get a "proper" diagnostic for diabetes online. I understand that even some doctors are discouraged to test themselves for diabetes. I'm simply here for opinions, a slight update on my condition however. My thirst & eating seems to be regular again, I am showing no diabetes symptoms any longer. Nor am I feeling any effects of it, I understand seeing the doctor is still a great idea. I can't have that done for a while. I am now confidient it was just a dehydration/puberty situation. It would make sence from my perespective.

you must get glucose test from the doctor. I get this test each 6months. if glucose is not more then 200mg then this is ok.

How can his mom's results effect his own? Each test is an individual result.

Your analogy about heroin users is a very bad one; and blatently misleading i'd say. do you even know how a glucometer works? each test id some with a disposable lancet. So if he uses a new lancet, and one his mother, the heroin user, had not used, then there is no chance of him getting diseases from his mother.

Okay, you caught me. I guess I don't know much about this sort of thing. But as I said, the OP should get checked up at the doctor's office. It is only right.

Haha i don't think you do. Does she have type 1 or type 2. I think your just growing seeing as you're 15. I thought the exact same when i was urinating more. My grandma has diabetes.
Peeing more isn't really a good indication of diabetes, you should be more concerned if your blood sugar level is too high and if that's making you behave or feel different.

Get tested anyway, i think they'll just give you a sugar or carbohydrate pill/injection, and monitor your insulin levels afterwards.

There are 2 types of diabetes- type 1 which you're born with, although often doesn't appear till later (you're now at the most common age to start getting symptoms) or type 2 which usually develops later in life. If you're diabetic you'll probably also have suffered from constant thirst, fatigue, rapid weight loss etc. If you were one of my casualties (when I'm out with St John Ambulance) I'd suggest that you go and see a doctor and they can test you for it.

I simply cannot understand how you do not have the time to see a GP for the finger prick test...would you be like that if you were really sick eg: appendicitus etc No, I think not.

I couldn't say it better!
Diabetes can permanently damage your body if not taken care of.:(

Get a professional opinion about it, teenagers cannot tell you what you may or may not have.

Here's what I've found for you:

Type 1 Diabetes
Frequent urination
Unusual thirst
Extreme hunger
Unusual weight loss
Extreme fatigue and Irritability
Type 2 Diabetes
Any of the type 1 symptoms
Frequent infections
Blurred vision
Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections

Been a while since I replied to this thread, my mother has Type 1 Diabetes and I no longer meet any symptoms other than Hunger, which isn't too major as it's something I experience every once in a while judging i'm a 15 year old. I'll keep my eye on my health and see fit till then.

I don't have anything..apart from suggesting you to go to doctors and take a test, for your own safety.
