I'm thinking about getting this for general use, movies, web, homework, and a little bit of bf3, Gary's mod, and racing games.

I would think so. I have an i7 desktop (which runs everything great), and 12g seems like a lot for a laptop. The 500 GB may be a bit low nowadays, but I guess it would be fine if you don't want to load it up with a ton of stuff.
Not that I'm an expert, of course.

I'm worried that 2.3ghz for gaming will be a little sluggish :/

Yeah, i'm definately sold on the i7.
I think I'm ok with 500gigs of storage for now. I share an older Mac with my bro currently, and even though I save like every photo I ever see on the internet, I only use like 100 gigs out of our available 500. A game like bf3 will take up about 15gigs.
I don't do that much else, but if i need to I can purchase a separate SSD and install it. It has 2 hard drive slots. :)

The i7 is good. You can always over clock it. The rest is also fine and Asus has a great motherboard. You need a external non integrated gpu, it may have it but I can't see the link from my phone

The listed gpu is a Nvidia Gefroce GTX 670M.

Well it's an independent Gpu then. It'd be fine for Running BF3 on Low-Mid setting I think. I'd say get the laptop. If you decide to get it, contact me and I'll tell you how to set the nVidia card by default so you get the most performance out of it. It comes disabled in almost every game by default so you save power.

I'm probably going to get this in August some time, so there's no rush.
I was also going to slap one of these in it for blue ray movies :)

Apparently this drive is on other versions of this laptop, so it should fit good.

Also, do you know how I could install an ssd drive into the second bay? Do I need win7 installation disk or anything?

Seems like a beast of a computer. I am all about portability so 17 is too big of a laptop as far as I'm concerned. 2.3 is fine since it's a quad core. Have you looked into alienware? They make some of the best gaming laptops.
Also I would think if you wanted the best gaming experience you'd just get dekstop, but that's just me.

I'd say yes. system files can't be copied directly to the SSD so you'll need the CD
EDIT: Saw the specs. that'd run the games you wish in mid-hi settings with a decent FPS I think. 3Gb is a whole lot of memory for the games you wanna run.

It would run fine... I have a lap top with a GT 640M and I can play CoDs etc on ultra settings.
Some things though... I wouldn't want to pay 1400$ for a lap top without getting a SSD.
The CPU is quadcore... And it's a 3rd gen i7 so it wont be sluggish with turbo boost etc it can go over 3. Probably 3.4 GhZ too lazy to check that model.
If anything will make things slow it will be the HDD. SSDs much faster & they make loading times for games and well everything much much much faster which will make your computing experience in general feel faster than those buff GPUs and CPUs will :P

I don't have a win7 installation disk though. Couldn't I just make one from what's on the hard drive when the computer comes with win7 pre loaded?
Also I'm probably going to put in an ssd before using the computer.

Can i ask what made you decide to get a laptop over a desktop? I understand the portability of a laptop is convenient, but you're looking to play games on it. Are you really going to take your laptop somewhere with a fast enough wifi speed to play the game(s) at an enjoyable pace? Even if you're bringing it to a friends house or something, are you just going to sit there and play a game?
Desktops are far superior to laptops in terms of gaming. Better yet, that laptop is overpriced as fuck. You're only paying for the brand name. A desktop computer built independently (meaning you buy the parts yourself) would cost you at least ~$400 less. It would probably have better specs on it too.
If you really, really, need a laptop, then go for it. If not though, i'd advise you to look at the other possibilities, like a desktop.

I'll talk to a guy i trust about it to see, but the PC should come with a disk.

That's a lot to spend on a laptop,
It will be hot, an i7 in a laptop body will always be hot, And preferably if you could get a laptop cooler that would be great.
The graphics seem good.
The Ram is excessive, because it's most like 2 *6 gb SODIMM which is a stupid configuration, Or even worse 8 + 4, If you could / feel confident enough, It might be beneficial to swap those out for a matching pair of 4 GB corsair Vengeance SODIMM's
The hard drive is okay, if you needed a bigger one you could just get a bigger one, Overall this is going to outperform for what you want it to do.

Thanks for all your help :)
Wow u know a lot bout this kind of stuff huh. :P
But after a ton of looking around, I see that in my case (pun intended) it would be much better to invest in something a little larger, so I think I'm going to instead consider putting together my own desktop machine. :)
I think I'll create a separate thread for the desktop build.
Thank you everyone for your brains and info :)

I've decided to ditch this idea in favor of a desktop PC build.

This will be good for any kind of gaming, because of the GTX video card.. it's a very strong laptop in general, but SSD drive could make it much faster in the common tasks.
