Dear Sir/Madam,
My son is 20 years old and three years ago he started to show signs of schizophrenia. The illness at him is manifesting with closing him up in himself. On the beginning he was losing his apetit, he is not present in the conversation while he is some company, losing interest for everything, depression and similar.
The first couple of months he was moving all the time when he was sitting on a chair, but with persistence of my family we succeed to convice him to lose that habit. All the time he is superstitious and he thinks that someone is making some kind of “bad magic”.
I must mention that in this three years in different periods his condition was changing. Sometimes I was thinking that my son was cured, and sometimes I thinked that there is no cure for him. Frequently he is in crisis, especially when he is alone, when he is not accepted in a company and in a lot of other situations, the depression is very frequent.

Terapy
On the beginning he started to take pils “Respiridon” or “Riset” from 1 mlg, and a stage by stage, the doctor- psychiatrist was increasing the dose, so now he is taking 5 mlg on a day, and he is taking 3 mlg on the morning and 2 mlg on a night, and plus 3 mlg of “Mendelex”.
This couple of last days he is taking a new medicine: “OLANZAPIN” and he now is not taking “Respiridon” and “Mendelex”, but only this “OLANZAPIN”.

Additional Terapy
As a additional terapy for some period he was taking “aquasource” (or so called: seaweed) and from this he was feeling better. Now as a additional terapy he is taking “PABA” (Para aminobentoic acid : 500 mlg), and this was recomendet from a doctor- psychiatrist, and he said that it is really good for this kind of situations, but said to say my son doesn’t fill any effect from it.
In some periods he was taking also “zink”, and also a lot of teas and similar medicines.

Please can you tell me your opinion about the regular and the additional terapy, is there any alternative and what is it?
What is your opinion about the medicine “PABA”, does it have any use for this kind of diagnose?
Will it be any kind of use if my son is going on classes for “JOGA”, and what kind of it, with a goal that it will have a positive influence on his condition?
Thank you in advance.

Ok, I'm hardly an expert on schizophrenia, but I'll tell you what I know from my Psych studies and living with a Shrink (my Dad's one).

Schizophrenia is a life long condition, it cannot be 'cured', but the meds can stabilize the symptoms. I Googled some of the things your son is taking, and he seems to be on a combination of traditional anti psychotics and some 'alternative' things, like vitamins and sea weed. Clinical studies indicate that the more 'traditional' forms of treatment (the anti psychotic medications) are effective at alleviating the more obnoxious symptoms (the hallucinations, delusions, strange thoughts, the bizarre moods, the withdrawal, etc.) when they're properly adjusted and monitored by a competent psychiatrist. The 'alternative' treatments have shown little to no effect in controlling the disease (which is why your son probably doesn't feel any better after using them).

It might be a very good idea to meet with your son's psychiatrist and have him explain to you the treatment, and to make sure he is meeting with him regularly to assess and adjust his medications. I'm not sure what the treatment standards are where you live, but active treatment (at least until he is stabilized and the right medication) seems key here.

If your son is 20 then you must be at least 30, I'm sorry but rules are rules.
