So what are your views on this?
For those of you who don't know, Ireland is one island but two countries. Six counties in the North are part of Great Britain, and are called Northern Ireland, while the remaining twenty six counties are the Republic of Ireland. Many years of civil war and "The Troubles" have gone on over the six counties, with the IRA performing terrorist acts.
My own personal view, as an Irish citizen from the Republic, is that those six counties are Ireland. Ireland is our country. Britain had it's day with conquering and ruling. Give us back our country like you gave back everyone else's country. Families have fought, brother against brother, and it all could have been avoided if you had just gave us our whole country back in the first place.

Honestly, the UK doesn't want to budge because then for example, Scotland could demand independence. Ireland should be completely independent.

You know that's very disrespectful to the country I would gladly give my life for. If you're gonna hammer my country, then you and "Great" Britain can fuck right off.

I would honestly like to see Ireland united one day, but I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon. The Protestans living in Northern Ireland don't want to leave the UK, and it mostly comes down to the religious clashes with the Catholics in the Republic.
The entirety of Ireland should be independent. So should Scotland. It's about damn time.

The UK actually means United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain was a single Kingdom made up of the former Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Scotland.

I'm a goddamn Protestant, and it bloody sucks when you attend a Catholic school.
1- They automatically assume you're British.
2- They're scared to make "United Ireland" comments because they think Imma blow em up after.
But the Nordy Proddies need to get a grip. Wanna be British? MOVE TO FUCKING BRITAIN.

Ireland is an Island. Not a continent.
If there wants to be an election there, all of the residents of that Island have to vote not just Northern Irishes. It is my idea.
But Falklands is something else.Whole Island want to be british and no one can force them to not be.
But Ireland is something else too.

Although called "United Kingdom", everyone knows that for everyone else they are English countries, not English and Gaellic, Scottish and Irish.
NI could vote whether they want to join the Republich of Ireland or not, whereas the Republic could vote whether they want NI or not.
Though that is quite utopic, it is absurd that Westminister Abbey would arrange such a voting process.

First thing's first, you should look up the definition of racism.
We've established the fact that the Northern Irish want to remain a part of the UK. That's not what we're debating here. So does Scotland. That's not because they give a damn about the Queen, or like the British, but it's because it would take them years, if not decades to kick off their economy.
Also, it's pretty damn obvious that the Irish achieved their goal. They wanted an independent Ireland, and they got it. Granted, not the whole of it, but that's far from nothing.

Wow, I never thought I'd see a thread about this on this site.
I studied Northern Ireland and the formation of the Republic for my History Leaving Cert. and from what I've learnt I can honestly say that I don't think the six counties of Northern Ireland will ever join the Republic ever again and nor should they.
Ireland fought for something like three hundred years to free themselves from the British and before that we were fighting against the Scandinavians who invaded. Irish history is a long and bloody story about a small and fairly insignificant (let's face it, it is) country trying to free itself from it oppressors.
But it happened.
It happened, and the English Protestants settled here, in the North, they have formed ties to the country itself but have also retained their ties to the original country: Britain. And I feel that's okay, how many Irish families have Scandinavian ancestry? A massive percentage. Do people care anymore? Of course not.
The people of the North had no issue calling themselves Irish but still wanting to retain the link to England. And in all honesty, if the Republic had remained part of the Commonwealth, our economy would not have been in such dire straits as it was, we would have had England's support.
During the formation of the Republic, England had lost interest in Ireland completely. We were a minor annoyance to them, they would have been perfectly happy to give us the North but they also felt as though the people of the North should have the right to chose where they belonged. So England decided that they would not force the people of the North to cut all ties with their country. The Ireland Act 1949 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland_Act_1949) was the first legal guarantee given by the British that the North would not cease to be part of Great Britain without the consent of the majority of it's citizens. The people were given the opportunity to opt out of the Free State and they took it.
"Most Gracious Sovereign, We, your Majesty's most dutiful and loyal subjects, the Senators and Commons of Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled, having learnt of the passing of the Irish Free State Constitution Act 1922, being the Act of Parliament for the ratification of the Articles of Agreement for a Treaty between Great Britain and Ireland, do, by this humble Address, pray your Majesty that the powers of the Parliament and Government of the Irish Free State shall no longer extend to Northern Ireland"
Religion was brought up, so I will address that. The Protestant North feared belonging to a Catholic ruled country, assuming (rightly) that they would be discriminated against. Just as the Catholic Ireland feared being ruled by the Protestant England.
The North cannot survive as a country on it's own. It's much too small and the economy would collapse almost instantly. But the people there do not want to be a country on their own; they want the extremely beneficial ties to England, and if England is offering, why shouldn't they have them?
The Troubles were caused mainly by the Nationalist Catholics who were unfortunate enough to be living in the wrong part of the island. They deserve their say, yes, but at the end of the day, the majority of the people there are Unionist Protestants. Majority rules, it's the way of democracy.
Don't get me wrong, I live in the Republic and am very proud to be a part of a country which fought for freedom for so long. But, in regards to the North and especially with all the blood spilled already over it, I think Ireland should live and let die.

Ireland didn't have a good industrial basics and resources i think is required for independence, because during the British reign they lost all of it.But still they are okay with their country,it is independent.
However,Iran has a good industrial basics and resources, but we have a lot of problems with the increasing of the costs like Ireland(but it will be better after the election),because of sanctions. It doesn't mean if their economy is bad, their management of financial resources is bad.It is because UK used a lot of their resources during its reign,
Like in 18th and 19th century in Iran and in China and other countries in colonization.

Ireland didn't really have any resources to drain from it in the 1500's, you make it out like we stole all there oil or something during the troubles. Ireland wasn't a colony either. Your just doing the typical 'if the British did it it must be bad' routine that seems to belong to the whole of Iran

It is because we haven't seen anything good in our countries in Middle East from UK.All things we saw were wars, looting of resources, stealing the crops of our farmers, betrayal, food shortages and ...
Also,Ireland didn't have enough resources before occupation, but after England captured it,Ireland didn't have anything only potato infertile famrlands.
