As a LGBTQ Ally, I would like to wish everyone a happy Harvey Milk day.
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in the United States as a San Francisco County Supervisor.
He and the SF Mayor George Moscone were murdered in cold blood by one of their fellow County Supervisors. Also of note, Diane Feinstein (CA Senator) and Nancy Pelosi (Former Speaker of the House and CA Representative in the House) were both in the city council building when he was shot.
Read more about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_milk
Today would have been his 83 birthday.
There's a great movie about the story called Milk. Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk_%28film%29

I just don't like guys, sorry Sam. Just not my thing, but it's cool that some guys do. It's just part of who you are. I can't change it, no one can.

5 years ago or so some girl at my school wanted to do a power point presentation on him, and it turned into this whole huge political issue because he was gay and the school was trying to cover their ass in case a parent got upset about it. So they had to sign a permission slip before the girl could present her power point on him. It was really stupid.

I love the film, this man is an absolute legend in my eyes. Baring in mind this was a time when Gay people were at their most vunerable because it was the start of the gay rights movement. If he didn't do what he did, the world would be a different place.

Well it isn't, I just live in a backwards redneck town, so anything like this turns into a clusterfuck.

Pity they that douchebag Sean Penn played him in the film - he's an evil man

When California rewrote their textbook standards they actually added in a blurb about including the impact of LGBT Americans in the civil rights section.
I think a read somewhere recently that Moscone's son was working on a documentary about his father. Could be interesting.

We never learned about any of this in school, but I actually live in a very conservative part of California (Ramona is a hick town if you didn't know that already)

There was a few year lag built into the system to allow for them to implement it. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/07/california-adds-gay-rights-advocates-to-history-books/
