View Full Version : Am I autistic?

Am I autistic? I actually think I have autism, but not sure. It finally decided to post this because I need other opinions.
I tend to tap my feet a lot when during class when I am not interested in what's going on.
This only happens in some classes. I never tap my feet in math, as it is my favorite subject. I mostly do it in subjects I don't like or I do not have an interest in.
I sometimes look around the room when I am working.
I glance to the back of the room a lot. I look occassionally to see what the teacher is doing.
It is hard for me to do something I have little to no interest in.
If it is video games or something else I have interest in, I can do the activity for a longer amount of time.
I have trouble going up to people to start a conversation with them.
I feel comfortable around one girl at school who is very similar to me in terms of interests and experiences in life. I say hi to her when I see her. If we talk, it is no more than one minute. I feel comfortable when people go up to me, but not vice versa.
When people go up to me, the conversations go on for 5 minutes.
I have been thinking it is ADHD or autism. Any help wod be appreciated. Thanks!

The tapping feet is usually subconscious, and many autistic people aren't aware that they're doing it. It's not to say you definitely do not have autism, but it's one of the factors that differ autistic people. For example, I sometimes grind my teeth when I'm not interested in something, but I'm aware that I'm doing it.
A lot of the other symptoms seem a lot like general social issues and general teenager hormones, such as anxiety meeting new people due to fear of being judged, and 5 minutes is actually quite a long time. Someone that has severe autism has general conversations as little as one or two sentences. Of course I know it seems like generalizing, but there is a blur in diagnosing autism in teenagers as symptoms are generally haywire during teen years anyway. By all means eel free to tell your parents and arrange an assessment. You could do but these symptoms may not be enough for a full diagnosis. You'll need external observations.

You don't have autism. In class when I'm bored I play with my fingers does that mean I have autism. I also sing in class when I'm bored :/
I don't know how to start convos if I start a convo I'll talk for about 5 mins then I'll like make it awkward aha

I'm the same way, except I shake my leg all the time and I'm never aware that I'm doing it until someone tells me to stop. I also find almost every conversation at least somewhat difficult to navigate through, though I do tend to feel more comfortable around my friends. I think it's just being a teenager.

We get questions like this on an autism discussion forum called Wrong Planet all day long, so you're not the only one who wonders about it. The bottom line is, you need to get professionally evaluated to find out. It's like someone who thinks they might have diabetes, reading about the symptoms and then asking people, "do you think I have diabetes?" Like with that, it's really of no benefit to you. It's great to talk about it. But you need to get evaluated for real. Could be something else that resembles Aspergers. To me it just sounds mainly like ADHD and general social anxiety. But those things need to be evaluated too, to help you lead a better life. Good luck to you. PM me if you want. I have "severe" nonverbal autism if you're wondering. But I know a lot of people with Aspergers (although they're not calling it that anymore). Now it's high functioning autism, verbal, nonverbal, mild, moderate, severe.

The stimming thing drives me bonkers on WP. So few people understand what it actually is, and more importantly why it exists in autism. It's not the repetitive movement that's being done that's an issue, it's why that particular repetitive movement is being performed by someone with autism. I don't believe high functioning auties need to stim, because they know where they are and what's going on around them.

I have all those symptoms too. I do not have autism. That is for sure. If anything you have ADHD, and I doubt that too. Lots of teenagers think they have ADHD. It's just your mind developing.

You don't have autism.
Woaaaah back it up, back it up.
Each person is different, we can't assume that she doesn't have autism because the fact is, none of us have seen her in day to day life. Therefore, we can't just say "you don't have it", because quite frankly it could be that she does, but a very minor form of it. One of my friends have that too, it's a minor form that's not enough for a statement.
So while yes, it may seem that she probably does not, none of us have the authority to say, or infer whether or not she actually has it, because we just don't know.

Well apparently I asked my parents. They said 7 or 8 years ago, the doctor said I had minor ADHD that I can overcome. Thanks

I seriously doubt you have autism.
It might just be stress, or slight adhd. I do the same thing.
