I want to be an active musician for a career, and college isn't necessary for that, so I don't want to go. I know there are music schools, but I'm just not interested really. I've been in school for nearly my whole life, and I really just want out.
When I tell people that, they sometimes gives me a hard time about it. So I was wondering for those of you who aren't going, are you ever given a hard time about it?
Oh and btw, if you are going to college, good for you, but please don't try and convince me or anything.

I'm not going to college. I know what I want to do with my life. I want to open up a martial arts dojo in my organization. I really hate it when people tell me that I have to go to college in order to be successful in life. My dad is the one giving me hard time. He is giving me a choice of going to college or getting a license. Of course, I'll get the stupid license. Not a car; only because I don't want to drive.

Yeah.
I mean, If you know what you want to do, and college isn't important for that, why should you have to go?

I am probably going to college although I think there is a chance I might not since I have a stable income and do not know what I want to do, it all depends on what I choose.
To relate to your case, there was a period of time where I did want to be a musician, but income-wise I would probably not do good. If you want your parents to accept the fact that you are not going to college prove to them that you can get a stable income and be able to eat and live while still being a musician, that is the hard part about it.

Oh yeah, no my parents are really supportive of me.
I usually get crap about it from my peers.

I'll give you advice from the perspective of a college student.
First off if you're positive that you can have a healthy career in terms of (salary, stability and stressfulness) that supports you and any future family you may want to have than no you probably won't have to go to college, but I'm serious when I say that unless you're 100% guaranteed to have a career with a 30,000+ yearly salary if you plan to live on your own and a combined 60,000+ if you plan to have a spouse and no kids (of course your location factors in a lot and where you plan to live) then you may want to consider college. And take it from me, those numbers are the bare minimum to live comfortably, I've lived under less. Now if you're not guaranteed any of those you may want to consider college, yes first off I understand it can be expensive, but college isn't really what people think of it anymore, what you're doing is getting a degree saying you have basic knowledge of your area of study and that is only suppose to get you in the door with a company or corporation, after your first job is your experience, how you present yourself and work ethic is what gets you further in life. There's more I could describe but I'm going to end up ranting. The reason I'm going is because my parents only graduated with a HS diploma and they've lived paycheck to paycheck their entire lives and I don't want to live like that anymore. Am in debt? Yes but that's worth it to me seeing as how what I want to pursue as a career requires a degree. I think its all situational and I understand some of you don't want to go, hell I hate going because I'm hands on and head first kind of guy with work, my labor work ethic beats the hell out of my school ethic (been working for five years now) but I deal with it and go to school anyways. I hope you rethink it and your future just to help you in the long run, what we think may work in years may not be so sunny on the other side, same with college, instead of having your mind set on not going, sit down with your parents or any working adult for that matter and get their opinion. Once again I'm not saying oh you need to go, nah, I'm just saying think about once you live on your own the situation that you're going to be in, I wasn't expecting this many expenses when I moved out, now that I have I want to finish my degree more than anything just to have more money to live comfortably. Good luck in your choices and journies.
Add-on: Sorry if any of you think I'm trying to persuade him, I'm not, as to answer your initial question which I shouldve done, some people get a hard time if you decide not to go but it just depends on who your family and friends are. Once again good luck to you man, I hope it all works out for you.

If you don't like school now, then college would be worse for you.

You should think of all the available options there are that are open for you in life. You don't want to close these potential options available because when you realize you need a college education it may no longer be available for you to the its fullest extent.
All I am saying is you should keep a open mind for the uncertainties and chance that plays an interesting role in life that can lead you anywhere, and that of course is where college comes in hand in which college may open a new network for you to potentially heighten your path towards a music career.
Of course..its your life, you don't have to take suggestions from some random hermit stranger behind a computer screen saying these things can be good, because who knows? It can be good or mad just take things the way you see fit, and good luck with your future endeavors.

If one doesn't want to go to college, that is their choice, especially if they want to follow down a path that doesn't really require college education. It's just that you have a better chance of finding a job if you have a degree. However, if you really don't want to go to college, you shouldn't be pressured into it. I believe lots of athletes choose not to go to college and go into major league sports and whatnot.

You should ask yourself, Is this really what you want to do? Musicians really don't make much money unless they are really famous. If you ever want to change careers, you don't have college behind you.
If you really think its what you wanna do sign with a record company.

Well yeah, I don't expect to become famous. I just expect to make a modest living and be able to do what I love most.
