View Full Version : Johnny K Has A Question!
The Resurrected One
December 8th, 2007, 04:53 AM
My old laptop is pretty much broken and it isn't working at all anymore, and I may have lost a lot of information on it that I would've needed to use later on. But if I'm not mistaken, all that info is on the hardrive of the laptop. I am using the new laptop I have right now, so that's where I am typing this from.
Now then, I was wondering if there's a way if I could get all the information from the old laptop, using the hardrive of it if possible, and transferring it onto my new laptop.
How could I do it, where could I do it, and how much would it cost?
- Thanks to all who reply

It just doesn't work anymore. The screen is all screwed up, nothing is moving, well, to put it in short, it can still turn on, but, uh, that's pretty much it. Nothing works on it anymore.

Hmm, right I think theres some way of taking the hard drive out and transfer it somehow...I think you can buy a cable that connects the hard drive to a usb port so you can transfer files, thats what my mate just told me on msn.
hope this helps!

it maybe possible to take out your current harddrive and putting your old one into your new laptop, unless the new harddrive is a SATA type then your old PATA(ATA) will not work. i never had a laptop before so i may not even be 50% accurate but since your old laptop's harddrive is a PATA you can plug that up to your desktop computer as a secondary harddrive and then begin transferring from there.

Laptops use 2.5" disks, so it can't be mounted in a desktop. I would suggest finding out what type of hard drive it is and if it is compatible with the new laptop. If so plug it in and hope it boots, although it my not due to a lockout that is put in place by some manufacturers so their copy of windows and not another will work. I'm not sure, but it may be possible to get an external enclosure for a laptop hard drive, thus allowing you to access it via USB or firewire.

Do you have a monitor you can use to plug into your old laptop? If so do that, you should be able to press Fn+F5 or whatever the key is to change the output.
If you can't I wouldn't reccoment plugging your old HD in your new laptop, even if it fits it can couse problems.
So if you cant boot into your old laptop at all, plug the HD into a desktop if you can, then you can copy files off it.

Be careful if you do plug it into a desktop. The drive will be completely loose.

What about something like this?

With that, You can plug your Laptop Hard Drive into your Desktop. You should be able to plug it into a Normal Computer just like any other Hard Drive, then you can copy your Files off your Laptop HDD onto your Desktop, or something, and Copy them via CD, Network, Etc to your new laptop.
That would likely be the cheapest, easiest, and least problematic Solution.
