Im heavily into horse racing and I think you need to whip the horses to make them go faster. Some people think its cruel, some people think there should be rules for whip use, some people think a jockey should be free to use as much whio as he needs. Fact is 75% 0f horses that win get whipped. What do you think?

Let's imagine a reverse situation here for a moment. You're the horse, and you've got this jockey sitting on top of you and forcing you to run around a track. If you don't go fast enough, you're whipped repeatedly. Would you really want that? And don't go off telling me that, "oh they're just animals they don't understand." Animals have neves just like you - they feel pain in the same way.

I don't think hurting horses is right :(

I took horseback riding lessons for a while when I was younger, and the most difficult part for me was getting the horse to speed up. That issue was partly because I wasn't strong enough, but I think I wasn't strong enough because I had trouble dealing with the fact that I was either whipping or kicking the horse to get it to speed up. I've never really considered how humane it is, but I've never been completely at ease with it.

lol I had to laugh at this. It seems so absurd to me to have so much worry over a beast of burden.

^This^

A horse has feelings, can feel pain just like we can. Using a whip is cruel and in-humane. If the horse doesn't want to go faster, just keep training it to be faster, not whip it to go faster. You hurt it, and also force the horse to go faster than what it's skeletal structure can keep up with, causing you to hurt the horse's ankles over a longer period of time, the hips of the horse will also start to get hurt aswell.

IMO: Its better to train the horse WITHOUT using a whip to go faster. Pushing it to go faster with pain is not good on the Horse's skeleton and can cause issues later in the horse's life.

And no, the horse is not a beast, it is a gentle creature, it never wanted to be used for racing as our entertainment.

Well I did get whipped as a kid and I don't have a problem with it. With most horses whipping works and if you look at top jockeys like Craig Newitt they whip their horses really hard and they usually win.

Like if you watch the YouTube video guapo x negrito you can see how the guy gives the horse a whipping and it zooms forward and overtakes the other guy.

okay...? It isn't really absurd. It's an animal that can feel pain just like you can. That's not really hard to get.

I'm not saying it's ineffective, but it is inhumane.

He was overage; that's why he was banned. Otherwise there would be no reason to ban him.

It should be regulated. Like a maximum amount of whips per race. Exceed it and you are disqualified.

Some horses wouldnt get into the stalls if they werent whipped. Also most horses go faster when you whip them. When I was in Argentina they gave you spurs and a scourge whip to ride and I never ridden so fast in my life.

It si in most places but the most successful jockeys whip their horses alot. Basically whipping works.

i've never really watched horse racing, but from what i've read here, it seems like a throwback to 19th century when people didn't know any better. can't they come with something more sensible and humane then a whip in the 21st century?
