Not depressed as such. I just feel like I need a girlfriend, someone to be there for me.

There's a couple girls at school I like but I'm scared to ask them out.
I don't really ever meet up with friends

Do you talk to the girls? Do they know who you are, what you're like, etc?
If they do then as long as you're confident (or even just appear confident..) I'd recommend at least attempting to ask her out.
You don't even have to explicitly say you want to go out. Just ask if one of them wants to go to the movies or something.

The main one I like atm I talk to every math class, we laugh and everything, but I've moved math class as I switched an option class so I'll barely ever talk to her anymore =/
The other one is an exchange student who's japanese with not hugely good english and is going back to japan on november so that's not really suitable

The latter doesn't really seem feasible, so I guess we'll deal with the first :)

If you pass her in the hallway, try telling her that you misstalking to her, or that you were looking back and were reminded of how cool she is (lol that's lame, don't do that), but you get my point I hope.

Just let her know that you want to hang out some more and you thought you got along.

I think if you won't talk to her very often because you're not in the same class anymore, it' s a good reason to ask her out. Otherwise you'll lose contact to her and then it'll be more difficult to ask her out later. It sounds as if she likes you, so just give it a try and ask her!
And to fall in love with an exchange student isn't easy.. a good friend of mine is an exchange student in the US and has a boyfriend there - now she's very frustrated because she has to leave, it's difficult.

Just a thought - here - relationships - getting to know people is not just some magic trick - it takes time and as you say kinda scary - Maybes you look to learn and practice - say with the Japenese girl - just think about it ask her out have fun together - I do not mean you be insincere or whatevers you both know she is leaving - hope thats okay bro.

I have only limited experience of this myself - haha and once shunned the most gorgeous girl cos she said horses were smelly and I have 6 and ride everyday -
