Hi, I keep wondering if anyone here ever gets reallly really sad, hates life, and is just all around depressed. Then, they catch some sensibility, realize that there is to much joy in life to be sad, and they vow to never shed a tear again over depression. Then, just a little while later, say a month, they are back in the same old boat, depressed. Do any of yall know a trick to remind yourself how to stay happy when that time of depression comes again? I have this issue myself, and I keep telling myself that THIS IS THE TIME that I will not get depressed again, but it eventually comes, and I just cant talk myself out of it. If any of yall have any tips I would appreciate them greatly!

this was the first method I tried doing when I got depressed. it was like a broken record I would feel great because I sort of talked my mind into feeling good. then one little stray thought of nonethingness would bring me down. The key is to talk to someone when your feeling sad, a counselor helped me tremendously. Also its sounds like you might be dealing with some sort of seasonal depression. does you depression come in waves?

Yeah, it comes and goes quite a bit. I dont think its like manic-depression, ive looked at that, and I do not experience extreme highs, nor does my depression come and go that fast. It doesnt really have a set pattern, not that I can tell at least. It just seems to go away, then come back again before I even notice it

Do you think a thought trigger's it? Have you ever talked to a doctor about this? He may be able to help you better. How long has this been going on?

I agree with Michael's line of reasoning here, and i don't want to interrupt it, but i have some thoughts, too, which might help.

Everyone gets depressed, but it's usually a temporary thing. One of the things that might help is if you remember that regardless of how intense or frequent it is, it always passes. maybe if you focused on that it might seem more bearable. Also, it might help to come up with a plan to deal with it before you get depressed. Think about what kinds of things would make you feel better/what's enjoyable/what would distract you, so you have some structure in place before you actually need it.

And, like what Michael says, if it's so bad and so intense that it really gets in your way, then its time to tell your folks or a counsellor and get some outside help.

Okay, I like the idea of a plan for when it happens next. Thanks Sam and Michael, I have a confident feeling that I will be able to succeed from here on out. I just need to prepare.
