View Full Version : Is He Cutting?

Today I found one of my mates had some tiny scars on his forearm. I thought he may be cutting but I don't think he has a problem to do so, because he's always happy and cheerful.
I *tried* to recreate the cuts with my forearm so you can see a similar picture:

What do you guys think?
In case you decide he's cutting, how should I ask about the cuts and offer help?
Thanks :)

Yeah, he is.
You have to be a really good friend to talk about something like that, so just reassure him when he is in class, and be really nice to him. stick up for him and stuff, and then ask, but only when you are in private, and really know him well

I never thought he would be (if he is), that's why I asked. I will try and get to him privately and just ask what happened on his arm.
Cheers guys

I wouldn't say he is definitely, but I think he is. Those cuts are quite similar to ones I did last year but slightly lower down. Offer him comfort if he is, it will really mean a lot to him.

As said I will speak to him about it tomorrow and offer help even if he denies it. Thanks
Alright. The conversation came up and I asked how did he get that cuts. He said he was climbing a concrete wall and fell and got rashed. One of my other mates was with him. I believe him completely.
Thank God nothing was wrong

Just because someone looks happy does not mean that they are, It's easier to hide behind a smile than it is to explain your problems to everyone you meet. More than often you don't want to let everyone know about your problems. It's possible that he is cutting but it's nothing definite, you could try asking him and that will show that someone cares about him and is worrying for him. It's also useful to have someone that you know that you can go to for help if needed.

My guess is that he's cutting. Those scars are hidden where you wear wrist bands and that makes an easy area to hide them.
For being happy, you can't base how he's feeling by the way he acts all the time. There will me times he laughs or smiles for real and time he fakes it. I put a fake smile for years and no one knew of anything, not even when I stopped.

That's really great to hear because self-harm is certainly a struggle. Echoing others above; in the case that something like this arises again, remember that people's exterior (seemingly happy, joking, etc.) may not always reflect what's really going on inside. If another friend saw him scratch himself then I doubt those cuts came from self-harm. That is really admirable of you to take the time to really figure this out, though --it shows great character and that you're a true friend.
