Hey everybody, lately I have been having some problems with my xbox as the title suggests. It's a 120gb Xbox 360 Elite, and it is a bit over 4 years old. I have been having some issues in some games where the it is trying to render a particularly intense piece of action, the frame rate drops horribly, and what I presume is the fan, (Which is already very loud) starts to make a horrible grinding/rattling noise. This carries on for a minute or so then all of a sudden, the xbox goes almost silent, the screen goes black and it takes me back to the home screen where it displays an error message along the lines of "The disc is unreadable". Has anybody else had this problem before? I'm not sure if it's just the hardware getting old or the disc drive being worn away, I'm not sure. :what:
Thanks in advance for any help you may give :)

Oooh I had this problem before.
What I did was take the Xbox apart, get a can of aerosol and blow the dust out (the fan) then put it back together. It worked. :3

It might also be overheating?

Sounds like it's overheating.

With it being 4 years old, I assume it's a falcon motherboard which is terrible for overheating.

I recommend taking it apart, cleaning the fan or even better, replacing the fan with some Talismoon fans.

I'd also recommend modding the case slightly to allow better airflow.

Simply search on google, it's pretty simple to do.

But with it being a falcon MOBO, not much can be done unfortunately.

I'd recommend buying a Jasper motherboard PHAT or a SLIM xbox (Trinity or Corona)

there are multiple problems
the first problem is that you dont have a PS3 (im assumeing)
the second one is that you have an Xbox 360 Elite
the third and Biggest problem is that you have THIS problem

That sir cannot be fixed. I have had the same thing happen to me twice and it was unfixable. Atleast you were able to squeeze 4 years out of the 360. Well there actually is one hope. How long has this problem been going on?

Well, it started happening very rarely about 2 or 3 months ago. It has since increased in frequency. Fable 3 in particular, is a bad one for this happening. Other games do it, albeit not as frequently.

You can try what Ryan said, but it's unlikely to work. My 360 from '08 doing the same. Luckily I have the extended warranty, so I get a new Xbox sent to me. Lasting four years ain't bad though, my 360 lasted from '08-'13, so I got my money's worth out of it.

If overheating is the problem, cut holes in the black power box.

Cutting holes in the power brick is a very bad idea, and for one, it won't stop any overheating issues inside the Console itself.

The biggest cause of the grinding fan noise is because it's running at full power and trying to maximize heat dissipation.

The Stock Fans aren't efficient enough when it comes to removing heat from the xbox, as such, whenever I get xbox's in stock, I always replace the fans with Talismoon Fans (Best Fans IMHO).

I also cut a hole in the xbox *CASE* and add a 80/120mm computer fan onto the big heatsink (GPU Heatsink) and simply solder the fan onto the motherboard connecting the ground and 5v wires to the correct points.

It solves heat issues no end, and may be able to fix the OP's problem.

But as I said, the best bet is to buy either a Jasper PHAT (No Heat Issues hardly) or a SLIM (Trinity or Corona MoBo).

I mod and fix consoles, so I'm just going off my experiences here but they have always worked for me.

Cutting holes in my power box worked. I just thought I'd share what worked for me.

Cutting holes in your power brick isn't only a bad idea, it's dangerous. There are large amounts of electricity flowing through there.

If I was to purchase a slim, how is the process of transferring the old HDDs files to the new one? As for fixing/modding, I have to say I would be rather apprehensive; I build PCs and have a decent knowledge, but I am no expert, and have never messed with consoles before.

Like I said, I shared what worked for me.
I'm aware of electrical currents. I build and modify my own electronics fyi.
I'm not advocating electrocuting yourself.

You can purchase a HDD transfer kit for a few bucks from any game store that allows you to transfer everything over :)

I'm not saying it won't work, I'm saying it's a bad idea *if* you don't know what your doing.

Like I said, I modify and repair consoles professionally in-store and have only ever seen this work once.

That's why I disapproved of it, for the fact - that it can cause more harm to the console (and possibly yourself) than good.

I'm not talking about cutting something in the console, I'm talking about the black box with the light on the side which connects to the xbox via a cable.
