View Full Version : Hiding scars now that it's summer?

So, I'm already being asked why I'm not wearing shorts or skirts, and I'm going to keep having to wear long pants all summer. I've tried using concealer on my scars, but it doesn't make them invisible (although it does make them look older, which is good I guess?). Anyway, I haven't recovered, and I don't want my friends and family seeing my scars, but I'm not looking forward to thinking of excuses for not wearing shorts or swimming all summer when I'm notorious for being hot all the time. Blah. Any advice? How do the rest of the scarred people deal with hot weather?

I read that lemon juice helps with scars somewhere. Mine never scarred so I never had to test it though.

Bio-oil helps fade scars. Not in time for this year probably as it takes a few months, but it's worth baring in mind.

As for swimming stuff, I used to use the excuse that my hair dye would run into the water so I didn't want to go swimming (might help if you have died hair).

Have you tried wearing skirts with see-through tights? They fade scars a little bit to make them a slight bit less obvious and I used to argue that I wore them because they made me legs look better.

Or you could just wear black tights if they're that bad and just say you don't like showing your bare legs?

I know it's difficult. I just wore a bikini for the first time in February since I started cutting 4 years ago. The self-conciousness went after a while but I have to do it again in the summer and this time in front of my family, which is a lot scarier.

I used to be really scared of showing any skin because of scars but gradually i just accepted them yes its hard to do but now i can wear whatever and any comments i handle with a casual glance and say i had a rough time. However mine are older now with fresh cuts personally i don't think you should have them on show i think its uncomfortable and kind of inconsiderate (this is just my opinion) so i'd wear long sleeves and skirts with thick tights that would cover the scars at a glance. I would just tell people i'm always cold and agree that it was really weird but i guess that won't work if they know you're hot unless you make up having a cold or something. Depending what your scars look like you could wear fishnet tights or other holey type ones cause then you are showing skin so it looks a little less wintery but the pattern might disguise the scars a little. You could try wearing white and lightweight clothes to help with the heat.

As for bikini's etc i really don't know wht you could say other than the excuse kathy gave you of dyed hair, you could forget your bikini on holiday if your family are unlikely to buy you another that might work. You could have some illness or you could say you're on your period i know you can wear tampons but i still don't like swimming so that could work.

I used to cut on my arm, and the scars are really bad there, really red and raised and ugly looking. I'm using vitamin E to fade them, but other than that, I'm just going to wear short sleeves, and anyone who comments can mind their own business. I'm still very self-conscious of them, but as my mom said, I put them there, so why be ashamed of them? I still am (ashamed of them), but it helps. So just let them show; anyone who's a true friend won't be rude about them, or they won't care. Good luck to all of you!

If youre not going in the water, white halloween makeup can help. Put in over the scars and when it dries put whatever coverup or foundation or something on it.

Everyone in here has great ideas. But the way I just tried not show my scares is by wearing a jacket. Though its going to be summer so I is going to be tricky. Are they recent? Because if they are you then you should worry about showing them and not showing them. If they aren't, then i agree with fullyalive.

Mine are more in hidden places so you don't really see them, but pawpaw ointment and cocoa butter are good for healing them :)

Otherwise, I know people who used a lot of concealer and foundation on theirs to make them practically invisible.
