I've never done it myself directly (looked in changing rooms often enough!). Some boys have done it and some don't like the idea. If you are, try and approach the question indirectly. If you're a little too forward, and he doesn't like the idea, it may cause issues. More indirect, and if he doesn't like it, you can "back out" without any issue.

Approaching in a joking and indirect manner is my main tip. If you are too forward and he doesn't like the idea/didn't even. consider it, there may then be problems. If you ask in a joky way you then have a way of backing out.
