View Full Version : An NBA Player Comes Out as Gay

I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.
I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, “I’m different.” If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.

This is great for the world of sports. An active member of one of the four major American sports comes out. This is written in his own words, and will appear in the May 6 sports illustrated.

I've heard on Sports Center that they're comparing Jason Collins's struggle to one of my favorite idols, Jackie Robinson. I'm glad he had the guts to come out and admit it.

I wouldn't exactly compare it to Jackie Robinson, but I suppose if you look at it that way, it makes some sense.

Because he's the first in sports which have typically been homophobic and overly macho and serve as examples for lots of kids

This is great news! And as someone from DC, it makes me feel good that he has a connection to DC!
