Okay, here's the deal. My school let's you download an ISO image of XP and install it or whatever. So anyway I extracted the files from the ISO image and burned all the files to a DVD, but I can't boot from it. How do I make it bootable?

Thanks

What program are you using? You need to have a program that supports it first.

Hmm.. i've never had to make it bootable. I've just used nero or a free ISO burner to burn it to disk and it boots just fine.

Yeah, the issue is he needs a program that supports burning iso files. His burner probably just wrote the file on the disc rather than the image in the file.

Your School Gives you the ISO Image for XP? That's slightly odd...

Anyway, You don't extract the ISO. You Burn it to a CD. It's an Image, or basically a Snapshot of a CD. You don't just drag it to the Disk, or extract the Contents and burn it to a disk. You use an option like "Burn Image" or "Burn ISO" or something like that.

If you want a free program that does exactly that, use This (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/ImgBurn/1128426215/1)

It should allow you to double click on the ISO and burn it. If not, just open the Program, and Select the File, and tell it to burn. The Bootable Part of the CD (Boot Sector) is Included in the ISO. When you extract the ISO, if you don't do it right, it doesn't extract the Boot information.

Ahhh, ok. For those wondering, I opened the ISO file with WinRar and then copied the files within the ISO to the disk.

And yes, my school has an "alliance" with Microsoft, and we get software at extreme discounts, and since XP is so old now, you can download it for free.

MSDN Academic Alliance Subscription, Probably?

Yeah, You have to burn it the other day, not just copy the Files to the CD. Or, it won't be able to boot from it.
