A Persian proverb says:"Two kind of debates do not reach to any results...One of them is political debates, and the other is other kinds of debates..."
It simply says that debates do not have any useful results...
What do you think about it?

Non-political debates rarely yield results. My mom got pissed for some school-related reason, and we started debating, I was winning, and it ended like this:
Mom: Mike, you are grounded for one week.
Me: Why? >.>
Mom: Because I said so.
Me: That is not valid reason. >: (
Mom: Ok, make it two weeks.
Me: X.X
Political debates are better. There you cannot be grounded or berated for no reason.

Debates serve the purpose of swaying people's opinions to become more favourable to you. If you can achieve that goal, the results will be, as you stated, useful.

I don't put my opinion out there to sway others toward my opinion. I put it out there to let people like me know they're not alone.

I think debates are great ways to learn and work through thinking. Arguments, debates, discussions, etc. can help people further their understanding and develop thinking.
That being said, I think that furious and angry arguments rarely have winners. Most arguments are between people with power or authority with someone without it, so unless the people are equals, it probably won't yield and benefits.

True. If somebody engages in a debate on an issue they clearly already have a deeply held view so they're not going to change that view however good their opponents points might be. The "result" will always be a draw.
The value in a debate is for the "spectators" who don't have a view yet but can listen to both sides and hopefully form their own view.

I can think of a lot of examples that prove that cynical proverb wrong. 2 sisters who left the westboro baptist church after basically debating with this Jewish guy for a while comes to mind.look at what a huge change that would be for them.
but yeah a lot of debates go nowhere because people who are stupid are also stubborn

Debate is the greatest right of a free society. It's an exchange of differing ideas, and is necessary for societal growth. It may or may not sway your opposition to your point of view, but, if presented with irrefutable proof, most reasonable people would, in fact, change their views. At the very least, debate is intellectually stimulating, and that is always a good thing. It teaches rhetoric and logic and helps us form our beliefs and then allows us to stand for what we believe in. None of these are bad things.

its because people become to egocentric to argue properly. instead of trying to come to a truth, they instead try to defend that theyre right, and they take attacks on their points as attacks on themselves. most people cant differentiate between their thoughts and themselves, so they have no way to criticise them objectively, so any attempt at a debate just becomes a fight.
