View Full Version : The Importance of Being Grammatically Correct

Something which has been annoying me more and more about the internet is the sheer lack of respect for the rules of the English language and, by extension, the people who you are hoping will read whatever you wrote.
I'm certainly not asking people to have perfect grammar all the time. When you are relaxing at the internet and winding down after a day in school you don't want to feel as though your comments are being policed for mistakes.
However, mistakes do not justify the appalling state of most of the comments, particularly on YouTube. Personally, I have to try to write that bad. It is as though the people commenting are under the impression that it doesn't matter what they write, it is the reader's job to try to decipher what the other person was trying to get across. We are all taught, from the time we enter school, to put full stops at the end of sentences and to start sentences and proper nouns with capital letters. It should be second nature at this point! Why do people find it so difficult to do? Is it laziness, apathy, or just a simple lack of respect for your language and the people you hope will care about what you have to say?
I'm not expecting people to become geniuses at intransitive verbs and complex prepositions. I'm just frustrated that they complain how no one is taking them seriously or people assume they aren't in any way intelligent when their grammar and spelling is so atrocious they look as though they shouldn't have been allowed pass playschool.
An example of what I'm talking about:
do your NORMAL life then ALL THE WHOLE WORLD EVRY FRIKING body will die TOMARROW it'S THE END OF THE WORLD and they say oNLY i wILL SURvive *
Does anybody else understand where I'm coming from?
Points if you catch the Oscar Wilde reference!

I agree, but I'm not as passionate about it; I've resigned myself to it. If I'm going to use the internet, I have to accept some things.
Grammar can really change the meaning of a sentence, though:
"Eat my child!" has a completely different meaning than "Eat, my child!" for example. And mixing up homophones can give a sentence a completely different meaning as well. Those are just minor examples, too.

I'll have to agree. It just bothers me so much to see people mix up simple words like you're/your and their/there/they're. Unless English is not your native language, or you have dyslexia, there's no excuse (that I could think of) for mixing them up. People also abuse the apostrophe; using it when it's not needed!

It seems to me as though there are MANY better things one could worry about than how people write on the internet. Sure, some things are impossible to decipher, but if you can't decipher it, skip over it. It's not a big deal.

I don't worry about it at all, it just frustrates and annoys me that people want their comments/opinions to be read and respected but are unwilling to put any thought into making it in any way readable or coherent. Of course there are other, more pressing, issues to be discussed and debated but this is just something which bothers me personally.

The important to buying fake oakleys sunglasses around today s world should encompass two huge considerations: health conditions and way. Purchasing new sunglasses for reasons that will don t pacify both these issues is similar to throwing money out of the window, since no one will use some of those sunglasses up to you must, or would whenever they met each of those criteria. Trust me with this. In today utes world, perhaps even celebrities, newscasters, and sportscasters choose sunglasses determined by these two criteria.

, all the burberry product are top qualtiy and free shipping. If you were to think of unique party for a friend's birthday party, it would be fabulous if you were to pattern it to the iconic Lady Gaga. She is one of the most famous and talked-about personalities of this generation and every move that she make is a headline. Whatever she states matters and whatever she sports is revolution. Everyone has gone gaga over this lady. As a tribute to her contribution to the pop culture, why don't you glorify her existence and have your friend's birthday inspired by this celebrated pop star.
Could you please clarify what this has to do with the topic of this thread, exactly?

As I have observed, it is the human tendency to try to impress, and in the last years most of the people find impressive and good the bad (ie bad grammar/bad manners/bad language, etc).
Oh and nice one, with the Importance of being earnest/grammatically correct:) I first read the begging and I was sure the post is about Oscar Wilde's play:)

Things like Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, and other various chats/social media you are bound to see chatspeak.
I don't mind some chatspeak, just as long as it resembles English. :)

We gots to keep that learning in Anglish class cuz we gotz 2 knows how to tawk ! You feel me, trick? LOL CUZ
Honestly, I do find that type of 'grammer' highly distasteful. The only time we should use phrases such as; LOL, TTYL, or OUT, is when we are in such a hurry that we cant even add another letter in the text or what have you. I do have to admit I tend to use LOL quite often but, still... The way some people talk is just insanely illiterate!

One thing that gets me is that for some people every word which ends in an 's' has to have an apostrophe. I've seen beer's, book's, pizza's and let's not talk about it's because for many people its just doesn't exist.

Well, kids in my class at school are learning English as a second (third really, Spanish, Catalan and English) language and they don't mix them up. That's because they're being taught to spell!

I completely agree with you. It drives me mad when people view the apostrophe as something to stick in wherever whenever you feel like it. Apostrophes are used to indicate a missing letter or to indicate possession. It is not used for plurals! Leaving out the apostrophe or sticking one in where it doesn't belong is misspelling the word. It's the same as a letter.
Why should proper grammar be optional if you're learning a language? Granted, if you're a beginner, you're going to make mistakes. It's fair enough. However, when I write french I don't leave out accents because I regard them as surplus annoyances, apostrophes are the same thing. Using them or leaving them out can completely change the meaning of your sentence.
Come on, people! It's not like it takes takes much effort to hit an extra key when you're typing.

Honestly, I think it's pretentious to complain about incorrect grammar in informal situations. As long as you can read what they're saying, it doesn't matter, in informal writing, whether everything is grammatically correct. If you don't like it, don't read it. It doesn't really matter.

What's pretentious about caring about your language?
It just frustrates me a little that people put so little care into what their typing. Some even make a point to make it wrong. For example, your grammar above is lovely. How much extra time or effort did it take to press a few more keys on your keyboard?
In saying that I do understand that there's absolutely nothing I can do about it - I'm just venting.

I always use proper grammar. It's annoying when people talk with no punctuation, or they misspell multiple words in a single sentence. I hate when people write like this or with numbers and symbols, it is difficult to interpret what someone is trying to say. Though, I've gotten used to it...
