View Full Version : Anyone Else Into Japanese Imports?

This is a spin off of Joe's American Muscle thread. Seriously though, it seems like people are all like "AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!!" I mean that's exactly how I am -- just not entirely with cars. One of my favorite cars of all time is the Nissan Silvia S15 and the actual imported Honda Integra. (Yes there's a huge difference between the domestic ACURA Integra and the Japanese HONDA Integra.)

Hear me out:
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is pretty awesome.
BUT: If my calculations are correct, the S15 in 5 times more awesome. Math lied to me because the S15 is actually a billion times more awesome than a smart phone!

How is a Samsung Gakaxy S3 relevant to the subject at hand, good sir?

No idea.

I wish the 2002 Nissan Skyline R34 was legal in the US. It's not because it's too light or something.

Oh, yeah I guess you forfeit most of your safety when driving a really light car such as an r34. Thanks for the explanation.

There's a difference between a '94 civic with a leaf blower exhaust that cranks out just over 140 horeses and a Toyota Supra that has over 650 horsepower.

I really hate ricers though. Before you call me racist, let me explain! WHere I'm from, a ricer is a slow economy car like a Honda Civic or a Chevy Cavalier. They usually have a catback exhaust and a bunch of useless plastic shit like wings, body kits, fake vents, etc. They don't have to be asian cars either. You know what I'm talking about right?

Since when did I mention a ricer?
The Silvia runs an SR20 and is widely considered as one of the most well known imported coupes from Japan. I drive a Legacy, which is pretty far from ricer in my opinion. Fair enough both are 4 cylinders, but I have never seen either of these cars labelled as "rice".

I do agree though that the poorly modified cars that are labelled as "ricers" are hateful cars. I swear though, if I see one more picture of a **** driving his Civic (complete with a fully sick cannon) with his steering wheel in his hand outside the window I am almost certain I will jump off a small building.

I just wanted to bring up a new topic. Today I saw a 96 Corolla with 4 of those coffee can exhausts. It was rediculous! Watch this video...

Ah okay, I thought you were calling S15s and Legacy's ricers for a second, I was about to get all emotional ;)

Haha wow, that is terrible. I'll give it to the guy, for a Civic it was quite tasteful (I reiterate again, for a Civic) but that exhaust is ridiculous haha

Yeah, for a civic, I do like the LOOK of it. The exhaust is awful! I would NEVER call any Subaru a ricer! That should be a federal crime!!

We get a lot of cars built for our market from Japan as we have right hand drive. As such those, these are models made for the Australian Domestic market. We get different features (usually less), different motors and different appearances compared to the cars made for the Japanese market.

The cost to produce a left hand drive variant of the cars (say, S-chassis Silvias, Skylines etc) compared to the amount that would sell, wasn't worth it. As such, some models are only available in America through importing a genuine Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicle, making them rare. This is starting to change though, the new GTR is available in LHD as are other models (370Z etc, etc).

However, as per genuine JDM imports, we also have more as it is easier to import Japanese cars here.

JDM as fck haha

But yeh Aus spec cars vs JDM cars usually suck. Shame a lot of import cars are dodgy with their history. Personally I'm keen for an S15 atm lol

Imports are fun! I'm a Subaru guy...first car, and still my daily, is a 1997 Subaru Legacy Wagon, yes, grandma's old car. I got a little tired of it being gutless, and I've always wanted an STi so I bought a rolled 2007 STI with about 43,000 miles on it. Full swap. Engine, tranny, axles, suspension, brakes, interior, basically everything but the body. It's a pretty fun car now...nobody expects the 450hp that comes out of it...

There are a lot of "rice rockets" around where I live. I guess I'm just an elitist and like European technology and innovation. However eurocars tend to get tuned out as well by the wealthier among the tuning crowd.

I like the European 'elitists'.
I used to love the look on their face when my 4 door Legacy sedan blew the doors off of their GTI Golf/Sirrocco R/125i/C350 etc etc.

Yeah I had a H6 model with and exhaust and a tune.
I got the AWD jump and we were dead even but due to my launch he was just behind my back door and had to back off.

Doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile :P
