Doctor diagnoses you with depression because you are sad due to a recent tragic event? Guess what? THAT'S NOT DEPRESSION. Depression is being sad for no reason. Sadness is a normal human emotion that helps you get past that tragic event. Yes, you do get to cry, yes, you do get to be angry and in denial. Take it from someone that is experienced in that situation, my mother passed away december 21, 2011, 4 days before christmas, aka, her favorite holiday because everyone in the family is happy with christmas cheer, which has now become a family tradition, instead of having to do with religion.
So don't suppress your emotions with pills, let it out to someone you can talk to.

Uh....................
Where do I start.
Depression is not "being sad for no reason", that's the most vast over-statement I've probably ever heard.
I could go in depth about this but really, I don't want to post a fourty page long essay describing different kinds of depression, diagnoses and whatnot..
Also "don't suppress your emotions with pills" is another over-statement. There is such thing as chemical depression where the only "fix" so to speak and for lack of a better word is with pills, often times due to a lack of Serotonin. These (Or at least SSRI's, rather) will stop the re-uptake of Serotonin Neurotransmitters in the brain, therefore leaving them active in your synapses for longer.
It goes much deeper than that, and there are many other forms, but I'm not going to post about it as this would seriously take ages..
While I appreciate the sentiment (I think..?) that's trying to be expressed here, don't over-generalize about something that you don't really know about.
People ARE able to get better from depression, and odds are that's what happened with you. But now by posting this, you're effectively stating that depression is a life sentence to those people who DO have it, which is not only amazingly rude but incredibly ignorant.
Glad to hear you're feeling better but still, don't pass off pseudoscience as fact.

I have a few things to adress. First of all, what part of the post did I even imply "depression is a l ife sentence", the message of the post was you don't have a mental sickness, and I'm not saying depression is, you have emotion. Depression is not being really sad, that's morose.
Second of all, im not being rude nor ignorant. I went through a tragic event and now I'm able to discuss it with family easily. And on top of that my mother was going through depression several months before she passed away, she would sometimes zone out with this terribly painful look on her face. So, I do not think i am being ignorant or rude, in fact you are being ignorant of the message and rude about your reply.
Finally, I was never diagnosed with depression, I wasn't diagnosed with anything. So, if you don't have anything nice to say, fuck off.

Also, how is what you're posting about not depression... What you're saying doesn't make sense, you're posting that you had symptoms of depression and were DIAGNOSED with depression, and that now that you're feeling better, it's magically not depression...
People ARE able to get better from depression, and odds are that's what happened with you. But now by posting this, you're effectively stating that depression is a life sentence to those people who DO have it, which is not only amazingly rude but incredibly ignorant.

I think he means if a family member dies, and you're sad, that's not depression, that's just normal grief.

Thanks for swearing at me and telling me to "fuck off" when I'm bringing up points that you made yourself, and expressing my confusion at your incredibly convoluted post.. That really brings a real air of maturity to this debate :yeah:....
But I digress, back on topic.
Explanation of how you implied that depression is a life sentence:
You stated that being diagnosed with depression, isn't depression. Literally, that was your FIRST, POINT....
EDIT: (And if you're going to argue that this is due to a recent tragedy, that makes no difference... The fact still remains that recent tragedy's can CAUSE DEPRESSION in people...)
You then went on to explain that this was because apparently, feeling sad and then not feeling sad means that you never had depression to begin with.
That in and of itself was your first point and made absolutely no sense.
By this logic one can deduce that you're saying that if you have depression, and get over it, that's not depression.
Thus you can FURTHER deduce that by this you are now stating that to have depression, you need to never be able to get over it.
Lastly, you also blatantly stated and I quote "depression is being sad for no reason"...
That's so off the mark, INCREDIBLY ignorant, and in conjunction with what you just said insanely rude.
Logic explained :|.
Also try to lay off the profanity this time around, it adds a real sense of irony to the whole "rudeness" thing..
SECOND EDIT: Also, what does one person's mannerisms who was diagnosed with depression have to do with anything..... Not everyone is the exact same and not everyone is going to have the exact same symptoms with such a diagnosis whatsoever....
I think he means if a family member dies, and you're sad, that's not depression, that's just normal grief.
Maybe, but even that's an over-statement in and of itself. It's not always 100% the case.
But for the sake of being hypothetical, if he had meant that... Why is he not just saying it now...
So I'm not really sure if that was in fact what he meant, in all honesty.
Please don't double post~DerBear

This thread isn't asking a question and isn't really discussing an experience and has lead to members fighting. I am therefore going to lock this thread because it is evident members can't discuss what was said in the original post without starting to add insults to one and other.
