This month in gym every class is spent running outside on the track. We have to run a mile. All of my friends are very fast runners and can finish in about 6 minutes. I dont have the endurance they do and i can only complete the mile in 8 minutes. Any advice about running or endurance would be great.

What's two more minutes? At this point, I'd be content with your current time. 8 minutes isn't that bad. I do it much slower and I'm happy with what I can do.

I've done far worse than you. It takes me twice the time..but then again I'm not extremely fit. There's nothing wrong with finishing in 2 more minutes than your friends.

I've done a few seconds over six minutes. It's one of my goals this coming year to actually get there. I'm used to running a lot, but I'm not as strict as I should be with myself.

Running is all practice the more you do the faster you get, for my navy fitness test I had to do 1.5 miles in 10 minutes and that was really easy simply because i trained hard for it.

8 minutes is awesome. My mile takes about 10 minutes, running isn't my strong point at all though which needs to be improved. My excersise amount went from 3 times a week to none. (Thanks to school work >_>)

Some advise is to just practice long distance. I mean practice does make perfect.... Well in most cases. I mean if you dropped your iPhone and cracked the screen, dropping it again won't make it perfect again. Okay, got off topic. It's not that I have ADH-Ooooh look! A butterfly!

Please stay on topic.

The only way you can increase your endurance is with a good diet and exercise. Just go for mile and a half runs every couple of days and you'll be conditioned for mile runs.

I know how you feel. During soccer I can run about a 6 minute mile, but right now i can only do it in 8 minutes.

What you have to do to gain endurance and speed is be committed and go for a run a few days every week. You can run only the mile, or you can run for a set amount of time like 20 minutes, which would get you in shape much quicker.

Also eating healthy would help out alot.

Well you need to train everyday! Run half miles! When you do this, you get a little faster and you get use to running a long distance. You need to do it everyday or every other day so you can stay consistent with your running improving your time. This just doesn't happen after one or two times before you take your mile.

Just practice long distance runs and you will definitely get better. Also, don't forget that your arms play a part in your running believe it or not. So don't forget to pump your arms. Like i said you will get better.

I can do it in 9 minutes and I'm not complaining. 8 minutes isn't bad.

One thing is practice, diet, and exercise.

Another thing. I don't know if you know this already but, stay light. I had to do a mile run for fitness testing in gym on Friday. My mom was making me do agility workouts and whatnot and she gave me all these tips, one being to stay light. Don't pound too much. It slows you down AND leads to injuries. Listen around you. do you hear lots of pounding? Break off of it and stay on the balls of your feet. Trust me. I used to do 9 or 10 minute miles. Friday's run, I had 7:11, because I was light on my feet. And fyi, I'm not a great runner either.

8 isn't terrible.... I usually squeeze my miles in under 6, but then again I skate about 7 hours a day....... Which helps me endurance wise. I could probably skate a mile faster than I could run it.

Do you have a treadmill at your disposal? If so I'd recommend interval training.

It is a hard routine, but it will make you fit and is one of the most effective ways to bring your times down (from what I have found).

If you have a treadmill to use I will post a interval training routine up. Cbf'd typing it :D

Keep a steady pace. Not to slow not to fast. I'm in the all star soccer team so that's alot of work. I can't do a 6 minute mile that's too much! Mine is like 7 mins or so

I'm naturally athletic (meaning I'm athletic for being a lazy ass who doesn't work out very often), I don't play any sports, although I don't work out as much as I should or would like to and am out of shape right now, I managed to pull together a 6:45 mile for my PE fitness testing. My best advice to you is if you want to improve your time practice doing a mile. Run one mile a week and time yourself and I promise you, you will slowly see progress.

usually do sprints but for longer distance its probably 7.5, I should be running more often to get that time down. I do need some new shoes .. so maybe that will do the trick

Practice makes perfect. After doing cross country and track I made it from 7:45 to a 5:18 PR. Hoping to break into the 4s next year, although I might have peaked already.

Well 1 mile is nearly 1.6km and 8 minutes is not such a bad time i haven't think about my time but at training my best time it's 100 m for 11.3 :)
