What causes them? Is it experiances in childhood? Chemical imbalances? What?

Just a matter of personal taste. Just like your favorite color, style of clothing, favorite foods/drinks, etc.

I guess then you'd just say that you were born and developed with these preferences. Don't think of them as an imbalance though, because that implies that fetishes are a BAD thing! :D
Although the only ones I've seen so far on VT are for.... feet and larger women. I personally have a thing for lingerie... but what guy doesn't :D

Chemical imbalances don't cause fetishes. :P As Ant said, it's a matter of personal taste, what turns you on etc. Childhood experiences and your environment have also played a part in what your fetishes are, but it all comes down to whatever blows your hair back. :P

Fetishes are just [sexual] preferences.. Paraphilias may have more to do with what you're thinking of, but not necessarily. Paraphilias are just weird sexual attractions. Support the dendrophiliacs(people who are sexually attracted towards plants)! :D

I think it's really how you look at it. Some think of fetishes a preferences, and others need whatever their fetish is to be there or they won't get sexually aroused.
I've read in dictionaries that a fetish is defined as "a form of sexual desire in which gratification depends to an abnormal degree on some object or item of clothing or part of the body"
the word 'depends' has come up in a lot of definitions and a few forums that I've come across. If that's the case, I don't think it's as much of a preference (even though a preference is a strong liking). I see a preference as "oh well I'd like this better, but I'll have that since that's the only thing here", but even on top of that I think it's a little bit of both.
even so, as far as fetishes developing, most people discover their fetishes rather than choose them. These things probably come from all of those things you said. It could be the situation you grew up in, a chemical imbalance in the brain, you got bumped on your head when you were a kid...:P who knows? It may also be programmed into some of our genes and it could be a trait inherited after thousands of years of survival instinct.

It all depends on what you enjoy. I think its based on what you enjoyed doing way back when you were innocent.

I know Wikipedia sucks for a lot of things, but I like their write-up on this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_fetishism#Psychological_origins_and_development
It's a good crash course for what really involves some pretty advanced psychological theory and debate.

There are nerve endings up there. You can enjoy it too. Unless you can't have sexual satisfaction without it, it isn't a fetish in the medicals sense. I'd call it a "kink" - not normal, but harmless. Have fun.

IMO, to say that a fetish is the result of chemical imbalances implies that it is essentially abnormal and wrong.

Well...the medical term "fetish," something is so severe it interferes with normal sexual functioning, is probably not desirable to most people.
The colloquial meaning (something that someone just really likes that's unusual) is something that most people probably have. Irrespective of cause, there's nothing wrong with it. Everyone has a few chemical imbalances, probably. :P

I like thin girls with nice legs and a good rear, and as a kid (younger then 7) I liked the same thing. I loved climbing, I was really thin, and I had a mighty fine booty. So maybe fetishes are linked to what you like as a child.

So you have a fetish over you're own body shape?
Don't see how that works.
