Why can't you help? Posting on a forum is not going to help the situation...

What's he going to do, grab a garden hose and squirt some water on the fire?

The only thing he can do is to ask his parents to move any vehicles they have parked on the road to leave more space for fire trucks. Personally I'd be outside watching, but either way there's nothing you can do for the fire itself.

Comfort his friend that is sat outside his home watching it and all his belongings turn to ash? I'm not sure about you but I'd find that pretty distressing.

Yes, I would. But he didn't say whether his friend was home or not, so I thought he wasn't. I would expect that if his friend was around, the OP would be with him at a time like this.
