An outstanding tactical RPG with intelligence and heart, Fire Emblem: Awakening is one of 3DS’s very best games, writes Chris Schilling.

When you send troops out to battle, you don’t expect them all to return. Yet such a loss is unacceptable in Fire Emblem: Awakening. For a victory to be truly worthy of the name, you have to bring everyone home alive. Once a warrior is lost, they’re gone forever, but it’s not so much that a death leaves you one unit shy that will concern you; you’ll be unable to let any of your charges fall simply because you care too much about them. The bond you’ll share with your team is just one of this exceptional game’s many achievements. Fire Emblem has always been one of the smartest strategy series around, and there’s as much heart here as intelligence.
