I recently got a Samsung Galaxy s3 and I want to encrypt for extra security, but I'm not sure with the negatives of this will be. When I went to encrypt device I got a message saying it was irreversible so I was a little uneasy about doing it. Exactly what will happen if I encrypt my device and despite what it says, will I be able to reverse the setting without a full factory reset?

Encrypting the Galaxy S3 basically means you have to set a master password that you will enter every time to start the device, in order to unlock the contents, and that there's no way to turn off the encryption if you forget the password. You should be able to reverse it but always make backups on your computer for extra measure.
