View Full Version : People are Starving in the U.S?!

As many of you know, the U.S is the leading country for many types of food production and is known as the country that feeds the WORLD. I recently learned that often when U.S farmers overproduce food the government pays them to either:
1.burn the extra crops
2.use less land so you don't overproduce
3.sell it to LDC(less developed countires) around the world for cheap
*the government does this because if they don't excess amounts of food will lower the price for it in the market*
Sadly, we don't use this food to feed our OWN country...
I just wanted some of your opinions on what you think the U.S should do with this food. Personally, I think we should start feeding some of the starving people in the U.S. In 2010 it was recorded that 14.5% households(17.2 million households) were struggling for food.
*I got a lot of this information from a college prep course I'm taking-Human Geography, would highly recommend you take it in highschool*

But you can't do that in a capitalist country - if somebody is struggling for enough to eat in the USA it's their own fault. Being hungry is probably a good motivation to work harder. From your figures 85.5% of households are obviously not struggling for food.
If you give people food just cos they can't afford to buy it you take away that motivation.

And yet it's perfectly ok to feed the starving people in the REST of the world? There's something wrong in that equation. It's criminal that anyone...and especially a kid...in the United States would go to bed hungry.

Yes - because the rest of the world don't have the advantages people in the USA have.
It's certainly criminal to let a kid go to bed hungry but how do you apportion food between the kid (who can't change his situation) and the parent (who can) - problem is parents use their kids as an excuse to get something for nothing.

Funny you should say that - there was some weirdo on here the other day that said a similar thing, fortunately he seems to have disappeared.

The U.S. is SOO MUCH DIFFERENT.
Food, in fact, is one of the things rising in price significantly. As well as gasoline.

It doesn't feed these very specific countries (not the world) because it produces a lot of crops since those are all consumed by the gringos. It feeds some very specific countries because it impulsively buys recourses to meet the consumerism.

I have a solution: stop feeding everyone; in our country and overseas. Period.
Eat grass and kill deer if you have to survive; the government shouldn't be your mother and have to provide you with everything. Use it as motivation to work harder. People can survive, here and in other countries, without the help of the govt., we've just become so dependent (and greedy) that it's sickening.
Yes, people are poor and hungry everywhere, and will continue to be. Interfere with the help of the government all you want, feed as many people as you want and even if those people get fed, they'll never be fully satisfied and next thing you know, they'll be up the government's ass about getting free clothes, housing, and health care as well. Just give them a taste of something good and show that you're willing to help, then they'll keep coming back for more.

How do you know the parent can't change his or her situation? Maybe the parent is disabled, or is out of work because their company shut down and can't find another job, or can't work because he's raising his deceased sister's six kids, or has applied to 60 jobs so far this year and can't find one. Do you think you should just let the parent starve?

As harsh as this sounds, I agree. I would be considered an "extreme conservative" by some. I don't think the government should involve themselves an as many things as they do. Our government caters to lazy people. And people think hunting and logging ruins the environment and kills off all the pretty animals. But rather it's the millions and millions of new homes being built. I honestly wish I was born in the early 1800's......sigh.

Our government caters to lazy people. Yes, those who work their asses off get taxed out of their hard-earned dough, while those that get govt. funding/food/health care sit around and do NOTHING... and then they complain about how bad they have it.
I honestly wish I was born in the early 1800's......sigh. Hmm... you might want to re-think that. Living out in the frontier or forest and being skinned alive my Natives or eaten by bears and dying of some incurable disease, I think I'd pass. Every period in time is going to have issues; whether foreign or domestic, dealing with the government or with nature; there's no avoiding that.

No need to be sorry. I can hardly understand myself from time to time.
