I have a big bunch of maths homework questions due in next week. There are two questions that are giving me problems and they are both to do with logarithmic functions

Here are the questions:

1) The curve with equation y=log3 (x-1) - 2.2 where x>1, cuts the x-axis at the point (a,0).
Find the value of a.

2) The point with coordinates (16,3) lies on the graph with equation y=loga x+1.
Find the value of a

I know this has something to do with exponentials but I'm stumped about how to start

Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated

Chris
