What is your opinion of swearing? What age should a kid be allowed to swear? Should kids be allowed to swear at home or at school? Should kids be allowed to listen to music with swearing?

My opinion - there shouldn't be a age restriction, age says nothing about how mature the person is. Anyone should be allowed to swear, unless its used in a bad way. Swearing in general conversation or when you hurt yourself is fine.

And to the last question It Ain't Nuthing But Music ~ D12

"That was fucking awesome" isn't offensive in any way. It uses swearing, but swearing, if not meant to be an act of degradation or offense, is simply another informal usage of communication our society has grown to develop.

I completely agree with you. Swearing wouldn't be as bad as it seemed if a couple of people had decided to not curse anyone with such usage.

It has actually been proven that swearing acts as a very slight pain relief, hence why if your drop something on your toe you swear without even thinking about it. I think it's absolutely fine for someone to swear in most cases

Swearing is okay, but in a sense, I completely hate using the F-word in many contexts unless I am seriously pissed off. In my childhood, I'd be slapped for swearing, as a 5 year old using these words:

Bitch, Fuck, and Shit would generally be found offensive and is too young an age to start using words if at all using them in total.

I look at kids of 13 using swear words, or listening to music with swear words, and there's a reason why some songs, series and video games are rated 16VL and 18VLN.

Its also to me to see how educated the person is. I've seen the F-word most commonly used as a second word in every sentence by people who aren't educated properly. (Not insulting anyone here, there are people like that even where I come from)

So generally, I believe swearing should actually stay as an age restriction. Nothing personal, but that is my opinion.

Words like:

Hell, or Damn or Bastard aren't bad words at all. I've used them since I was like 9.

I never swear at home because I don't really think it's right.
Like Hunter said, I use Hell, Damn etc.
I don't think there's anything wrong with swearing as long as it isn't directed towards somebody.

Sometimes a swear word is the only word that means what you're trying to get across. That being said, don't over-use them, because it takes away the impact of those special words. To use fuck every second or third word (unless it's meant to be funny, e.g., "Fuck the fucking fuckers."), is like ending every sentence with an exclamation point.

I mean, I find it odd when kids swear like a sailor, but that's just me. If their under 14 swearing close to every sentence, it's a problem. And that's the thing with kids swearing. It's not like they can't say the words, it's that they view it as "I'm so cool, let me say this one word twenty times." I think when I (hopefully) have kids, I won't censor them, but instead teach them that there is a time to use swear words and who not to use swear words around.

I don't think theres a problem with swearing. As long as I don't hear elementary kids swearing then I'm all set. Theres nothing you can do to stop kids from hearing swears in movies, music etc... I really only swear if I've stubbed my toe or hurt myself to relieve the pain lol

I don't care, let people say what they want. They're not uneducated, they're just words.

Yeah i swear alot from stupid things like dropping something, walking into doors, slipping but try not to around my little sister or cousins because they copy everything so i guess some places it ok, and others is not just like using it agressively i dont agree with

I know at least half of the swears in all of Latin America, the people from my hometown in Venezuela swear a lot, so did my schoolmates in Colombia. Therefore I could be addicted to swearing since I grew up with all kinds of different swears from different cultures. My parent's do not care nor do my friends and teachers, I use it as a way to express myself and maybe exaggerate stuff even more in a joke. So I will continue doing it. There should be no such thing as a restriction since cultures vary.

It's a form of Exaggeration. It is fairly fucking effective.

Degrading other people with it, like all other words is completely wrong though.

i dont think children should swear at all, cause once you start its a bad habit to kick. overall, i dont think swearing is good to use often cause its rude. but for children, it becomes a constantly used habit, and discourages growth of their vocabulary.

Honestly I don't really like swearing/cussing at all. I think it's really trashy, so I don't do it really. It really sounds trashy and I bet there's better words to use! But honestly if you want an age group, I think maybe high school would be alright, only because kids really shouldn't be influenced to such a potty mouth at such a young age. I've herd little kids in elementary school already cussing and swearing and it sounds terrible!

Swearing adds flavour to a conversation, but its kinda obnoctious when kids swear, but pretty much everyone starts in like 6th grade

I'd say 13 it's ok to say minor swear words, and 15 it's ok to say everything. If I were a father, that's how I'd do it. I'm talking about swearing around parents, those ages I think are acceptable.

When I'm a father though, my kids had better not swear to much. Just in moderation.

I dont swear but I think it should be up to the kid and the parents. If their parents use that language, the kids will think its appropriate and use it. I have no problem with swearing but I dont think young kids should do it.

One thing that I always find quite interesting is the use of swear words nowadays and how people use or react to them. Swear words are a bad thing, hence they are censored and films containing them are age rated differently. But what is the point? Once you have heard the word, which for me was when I was quite young, then why are people still so 'protective' over their child. When the words are censored, for example "f***" this makes it acceptable, but why? Everybody knows exactly what you mean, so how does replacing the other 3 with stars make it fine?

You're right, of course. Everyone but the most naive knows what these 'censored' words stand for. It's interesting why Saxon four letter words are considered 'bad'! The use of the Spanish equivalents in the classroom shocked me when I came to live here nearly four years ago. 'Joder' and 'coņo' are quite common, even used by teachers at times.
